Great Local Senior Group Activities for the Bay Area of California

Just because someone is retired doesn't mean they are retired from life. There are many activities that seniors can get involved with in their communities. My Mom, for example, officially retired many years ago, but that hasn't stopped her from becoming an exquisite artist. She has also been very active in the local senior centers by helping to develop a senior library system.

There are many ways to stay active as a senior. One way is to join an art class. This group activity is wonderful for budding artists that want to get out and socialize, but also hone their artistic skills. There are many places that offer the classes for low cost. You supply your own painting supplies but they offer the instructor and classroom to gather.

The Department of Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services for San Jose, California offers a city guide with a list of every type of class imaginable. Click the link and scroll to the middle of the page. Look for "Senior Programs", and click it to download the .pdf guide. If you don't live in or near San Jose, then just use your web browser and look up senior classes in your area. Some great ideas are Tai Chi, quilting, reading clubs and yoga. These are great group activities to keep you busy and meet new friends.

If joining a class is not your style, then why not try a senior travel group? There are tour buses that go all over the country and travel groups that specialize in traveling to foreign countries. It is a great way to get out and make many new friends. If you are not interested in traveling far, then why not try a casino group. This is another great way to meet new friends while traveling up to the local casinos. These can be for short trips or overnight excursions. River Rock Casino, located in nearby Geyserville, offers a variety of bus tours. Click the link to see their bus tour information.

Do you love to read? Does your local library cater to you and your needs? My Mom and a group of her senior friends noticed that their local libraries didn't fit there needs anymore. They got together and decided to do something about it. They started a senior library at their local senior center in San Jose. They formed a library group and spent months gathering used books that people were throwing away or going to donate. The reason they did this was to start their very own senior sharing library with rules that fit their lifestyle. What they did was put the books out, first on tables, and then to bookshelves as the project grew. The local seniors could go and check out a book, or three, of their choice, and on their word, return it when they were done. There were no late fees or deadlines to turn in the books. This started as an idea of my Mom's and has turned into a very large group activity. It was so popular that it spread to another local center, too.

Are you a closet bowler? Do you love to bowl but have no one to go with you? Why not sign up for a senior bowling league. It is a great group activity and fantastic way of meeting new friends. Cloverleaf Family Bowl in Fremont offers a variety of senior leagues to choose from. You can have your own equipment, or use the house shoes and bowling balls. Click the link to take you to Cloverleaf Family Bowl Senior Program. This is a wonderful family bowling alley that we, as a family, bowl at every Friday night for our own league. It is worth trying!

Great ideas. Unfortunatley the cost for senior classes - and other classes have gone up due to budget problems. Many fun activities can still be had and enjoyed.

I have never looked into senior activities...Most of them are way way way older than me.
