I have 4a thick, curly, non-chemicallly treated hair and I am also trying new products to straighten my hair. Although a great regimen is key to getting a straight look altogether, a good-quality setting lotion is key, too. I have used numerous " straightening products" that have added more frizz and poof to my hair than it has straightened my hair. However, these two products give great results.
You can find the Dove product at most pharmacy stores such as CVS or even grocery stores like Food Lion or Wal-Mart. The LottaBody Wrap n Tap setting lotion can be found at Sallies Beauty Supply Stores. Both products can be purchased for under ten dollars and in most cases you could take the ten dollars and by both. Which is great because you can try one then the other and compare the results to see which you love the best.
From my personal experience I found that both are great but provide different results. The Lottabidy Setting Lotion got my hair straight by using the blow dry and round brush method. This was great because it decreased the amount of time utilized to flat iron my hair. The final results were smooth soft hair with a little bounce. I had some body but I would have preferred to have more swing to my hair. However, if you want perfectly sleek hair to put pin up, this product is the best. With this product , my hair will stay straight for five days.
The Dove Volumizing Mousse resulted in tons of body but took a little bit longer to achieve a straight look. I blew out my hair but had to take longer with the flat ironing because my hair did not lay down well. Basically it had lots of body but it looked like a soft afro and I wanted my hair straighter. However, after flat ironing my hair, the results where excellent. My hair was bouncy and soft. With this product I can wear my hair straight for three days without frizz.
The Lotta Body product has other ways to get results from it such as the blow dry method that I used , along with the wrapping and roller setting method. I have yet to try these methods but I am excited to see what the results will be. The wrapping method involves saturating the hair with the setting lotion, then smoothing the hair around the head in a wrapping motion. You do this by starting with the back of your head and combing the hair towards the face and around. Basically, you want to comb all your hair around your head in a circular motion until your hair looks as if it lays felt against your head, kind of like a hat. Then you sit under a hooded dryer for one to two hours and let your hair completely dry. I would advise to add a bit of sheen to your hair as your hair dries so it will not feel hard. After your hair is dry you just undo the wrap and then your are ready to go. I love the wrap method because during my relaxed days it gave me the best swing to my hair, but now since I do not have a relaxed I have yet to use this method but will soon.
The roller set method is also an option and will require magnetic hair rollers with pins, a rat tail comb and a hooded dryer. I have seen great results from this style but on hair that has been chemically relaxed, not on no chemically processed hair. However, you may want to consult a few different stylist for the opinion on whether of not the style will work on natural hair. I have consulted on stylist so far and she has said that the style will not hold, but on many hair forums there are visual results that naturals can get this look too.
So go out and try these great products and see which one you like better, you may end up loving them both. Happy Shopping.
