Introduction to Mexican American Studies: This is the basic foundation course you will need to fulfill your Mexican-American studies minor. This class focuses on the history, culture, and contemporary socioeconomic issues pertaining to Mexican-Americans. Most accredited universities and colleges will require that you take this pre-requisite course in order to get into the more extensive Mexican American study classes.
Latinos in the United States: This is usually a three credit course depending on your university or college. This course takes a look at the Latino experience in America. The commonalities, as well as, the cultural differences of several Latino groups are discussed. Latino education, family, gender, identity, employment, immigration and politics are also topics that will be viewed and discussed in this course.
Spanish American Culture and Civilization: This course focuses on how the Spanish-American society and culture were established. Knowledge of the language is a plus for taking this course.
Mexican Politics and U.S.-Mexican Relations: This course focuses on the political and economic systems of Mexico and their relationship to the United States. Trade, immigration, energy, contraband, and economic dependency are topics that are viewed and discussed.
Cultural Diversity and Identity: Ethnic, racial, gender, and class identities are explored in this class. How identities are viewed and developed based on these factors, as well as, the ties between people and their identities are discussed.
Latino Immigration to the United States: this course examines the immigration from Mexican and Latin countries to the United States of America. Anthropologist studies of the huge Mexican and other Latino immigrants are discussed, as well as, issues pertaining to immigration. Citizenship is also viewed in this course and the familiarization of the largest immigrant community in the United States.
Texas to 1850: This course examines the multicultural heritage of the state of Texas from pre-Columbian period to early statehood. Social, economic, and cultural changes are all viewed as well as political changes within the state. There is usually a prerequisite for this course depending on your specific college or university requirements.
The History of the Mexican American: This course focuses on the role of the Mexican American and their cultural and historical development within the United States of America. This course typically focuses on the southwest of the country and is considered a history course.
Topics in Hispanic Culture: This course will provide information pertaining to Spanish music, film, radio, literature and all around cultural aspects of the Hispanics.
Chicano Literature: Various Chicano authors, writers, and essayists from several social, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds are examined in this course.
Women in Hispanic Literature: This course focuses on the female characters in Hispanic literature, as well as, female writers of Hispanic descent and culture. Themes, language, and the voices of women are analyzed in this course.
History of Mexico: Mexican history from its pre-Colonial Indian heritage to the current era. This class offers information in major events in Mexican history with a strong emphasis on the Mexican Revolution to help better understand the current situations in present day Mexico.
Mexican American Studies Research Seminar: In this course students have the opportunity to design a research project, prepare a prospectus, abstract, annotated bibliography and a research paper. Students also have the opportunity to evaluate their classmates on their work.
Chicana Women: An Introduction: This course emphasizes the basic concepts of being a Chicana woman. Gender and power relations are examined as well as focuses in the home, school, university, religion, environment and several human work spheres.
Chicana Feminism:History, Theory and Practice: This course explores the various visions of Chicana feminists. The Chicano Movement in the 1960's is also viewed, as well as, the Chicana's entrance into the literary, artistic, educational, and diverse community.
Latina/o Pop: Race, Gender, Sexuality and Popular Culture: This course discusses how Latinos have had a major popular culture influence on their culture as well as others. Latino television, magazines, advertising, literary texts, performing arts, music videos, animation and more are all viewed and discussed in this course.
The Chicano Movement: Exploration of the beginning, nature, and the political, social, and cultural aspect of the movement. Ideology, activities and the effects of the movement are also discussed in this course.
Latina/Latino Leadership Seminar: This seminar provides students with an appreciation and understanding of public policy issues confronting Mexican Americans and other Latinos in the nation.
Topics in Latino Health: This course focuses on health and mental health issues affecting Latinos in the United States of America.
