The Gallon of Milk basketFor this basket, you will need the container of an empty gallon of milk, a knife or blade, and a piece of long knit string. First, make sure that the milk carton is fully clean by washing it out. Secondly, you want to get your mom or dad to take the knife and cut the carton in half. I would cut just beneath the handle on the milk carton. Once you have an even cut all the way around, discard the top part of the carton. You then will have you parents poke a whole on opposite sides about an inch down from the top of the container. After that you will take the knit string and put it through the first hole. Give yourself some leeway and tie it inside the container. Then repeat the same technique on the other side with the other end of the string. You can then decorate the basket with stickers or with paint. Just make sure you don't use water colors because they won't stick. Use an oil based paint.
The Paint Can basket With this basket, all you will need is an empty paint can. You will first need to wash the paint can out and make sure it is clean. Once you do that you can paint the outside with an oil-based paint. You can also get construction paper and wrap it around the outside of the paint can once you remove any paper labels on it. Once you tape the construction paper up, you can decorate to your liking.
The Wicker basketAs far as this you can personalize this traditional basket by adding some cool accessories. For the girls, you can add rhinestones to the basket to give it a girly flare. You can also add ribbons to your handle to give it more personality. For the boys, you can add different colors to the outside. You can do this by getting your parents to spray paint the outside to your desired color. You can also cut out construction paper letters to put your name on your basket. You can just tape them on using regular tape. Just make sure to tape the letters on at the edges.
The Canvas Tote bag/basket For those who are going green, you can pick up a plain canvas tote from most department or multi-stores like Target or Wal-Mart. You can then paint different kinds of flowers, eggs, and even an Easter bunny on it. You can also paint your name on it to give it the ultimate personal touch. You can find oil-based paint at any Sherman Williams or local craft store. They are usually cheap. They retail around anywhere from under a dollar to about $3.
The Egg Packet basketYou can make this new twist on an Easter egg basket. The things you will need are a traditional egg carton and two long knit strings. You will first have your parents make four holes in the bottom half of the egg carton. These holes should be made at the top of the bottom part right at the edges of the carton. You will then put the first string through the first hole and tie it on the inside once you get it through. Then you will put that string through the hole on the other side of the container. You will then repeat that with other string to the other holes. These two strings will counter balance each other to keep the carton upright which will help keep the container straight. You can then paint the carton with oil-based paint. This is my favorite basket.
Which ever one you pick, make sure to have fun this Easter. Take time to be with your family and bond with friends. You can even use these small projects to interject fun into this holiday. You can also add the traditional plastic grass and plastic flowers into your basket. They sell them at local dollar stores and place like Target or Wal-Mart. This is a list of personalized Easter baskets.
