Great Places for a Corkboard

Terry Mulligan
Where do you have your corkboard? These hard-working little items hold notes to our loved ones, art from our kids, pictures and so much more. They tell the story of our lives. But, finding the right place for them can be a challenge. Check out how you can incorporate a corkboard into your room and make it disappear or look like it belongs there.

• Above Your Desk

Where's the most logical place to put your corkboard? Right above you work space. The wall above your desk is perfect for pinning up notes to yourself or inspirational photos. The trick is making your corkboard fit the space. Create a large, built-in version by covering the entire expanse of wall with cork and framing it with decorative molding. Or create a smaller version that mounts like a picture in a frame above the desk. If you want to get a little more creative, cover the cork with canvas or a fabric that complements your decor.

• Inside a Cabinet Door

If you're not crazy about leaving all your personal notes pinned up for everyone to see, you can create a corkboard area inside a cabinet door. Use a heavy duty adhesive to mount cork inside the door of an upper kitchen cabinet or work desk. Close the cabinet door and no one has to see your "to do" list.

• As a Kitchen Backsplash

If you're short on wall space and still need a place to pin up business cards or coupons you don't want to lose, look to the small yet long spaces between the upper and lower cabinets in your kitchen. It's a great way to squeeze in a corkboard and backsplash at the same time and it's cheaper than installing tile.

• On Closet Door Fronts

For larger surfaces, install corkboards on the front of closet doors. Trim them with decorative molding and you've got ample space to work with.

• In Decorative Wall Panels

Do you have a craft room or sewing room that needs artwork and corkboard space? Install framed areas of decorative moldings that fill your wall. Put a large frame in the middle and two long, narrow ones on either side; cover the cork with a beautiful patterned fabric and viola - you've got art.
