Great Places to Fish Near Parkersburg West Virginia

Locations to Fish in the Area

The clock is slowly ticked toward 5 and you can't wait to get out of the office. You would like to relax and do some fishing but you aren't sure where to go. Of all of the areas of the state of West Virginia this is perhaps to worst for fishing. While trout can be caught at Mountwood Park, the nearest trout stream is about two hours away. So what are you to do? Here are a few suggestions.

If you have a boat the choices are very good. Virtually anywhere on the Ohio or Little Kanawha River can hold good prospects. This is especially true around structure (bridge pilings) or where other smaller streams empty into the rivers. But what are you to do if you don't have a boat?

My first suggestions would be either the Willow Island Lock or the Wells Lock in Elizabeth. While each area is very different they offer good access and fishing. A problem with both is that if it is a nice day, it will probably be crowded. Mountwood Park's Lake is another possibility. Though I have never had much success (or luck) at this location it is large enough to find some peace and quiet which is my primary pursuit while fishing.

North Bend State Park provides both a lake and a small river (the Hughes) to fisherman. This is another possibility. Numerous access points are available to the fisherman near the boat ramps. The river can be easily accessed in the park itself near the campgrounds and the rail trail entrance.

But for those days when you just don't have time to drive very far your choices are limited to various access points to the Ohio and Little Kanawha River. Surprisingly I rarely see people fishing at Point Park (or for that matter the park on Belpre's side of the river). My favorite location is the boat ramp just off of Route 47. Corning Park provides boaters with access to the Little Kanawha River and Worthington Creek. While most boaters will simply head to the Little Kanawha, going up Worthington as far as possible can provide some good fishing with little competition. Fisherman on foot can also have good access to Worthington Creek from this point.

While fishing around Parkersburg can't compete with the Greenbrier or Cheat River the reality is that the best fishing is any fishing. So get out there and fish!
