Great Projects to Crochet This Fall

S Faloon
The cool crisp days of Autumn are on the way. The yarns that are available in yarn and craft stores are inspiring. The textures and vibrant colors are hard to pass up when you walk by. It is time to start settling into a cozy chair with a ball of soft yarn and your crochet hook. You may have found a few minutes during the summer time to make a small project but the cooler weather will allow you to hold a larger piece like a scarf or sweater without causing discomfort. A wide variety of fall crochet projects wait for you.

Fall Fashion The rich autumn colors will be reflected in the crocheted projects you can make. The air is chilly in the mornings and your children will appreciate a thick crocheted headband to cover their ears. The sports enthusiasts in your home will be proud to wear the bandsdone in school colors for fall games that are played out of doors. Watch out, your kids team mates may come to ask for you to make more headbands for them. A more experienced crocheter can whip up a fashionable fall hat for girls. Fall sweaters will be a welcome project for anyone in your family to wear in place of a thin jacket.

Autumn Decorations Your home will be warm and colorful with pumpkin or apple coasters, dish towels with trim, leaf garlands and stuffed pumpkin displays. Crochet simple sunflower potholders or thick, rich brown place mats made with single or double crochet stitches for a quick fall project. You can find patterns for Autumn, Halloween and Thanksgiving decorations in magazines, books and free pattern web sites. Your favorite yarn manufacturer has a free pattern on the skein wrapper. Many yarn companies have websites with collections of patterns and forums for their customers.

Christmas Projects Now is the time to start those fall projects for gift giving time. You can make nice heavy crocheted afghan blankets, chair throws and bed covers for your family and friends. You can also find whimsical patterns for crocheted stuffed toys, Christmas decorations, tree skirts and countless other projects.

Winter Gear Crochet mittens, stockings, gloves, hats, ponchos and scarves this fall. Cooler days are coming swiftly and snow will soon follow. There will be a need for the gear that protects your loved ones against winter elements.

Giving Tree, Hospital and Shelter Needs It is heartwarming for anyone that crochets when he or she is able to use their talent to help others. Countless fall crochet projects can be done to share with those in need. A wide variety of programs are in your area or state that can use items that you are willing to give to them. Fall is a great time to work on crocheted projects such as preemie baby clothes, hats for chemo patients, mittens, scarves and hats for needy children and Christmas gift for the local giving tree. This is a low budget way for you to be able to share your talent with those who could use a little warmth during the cold months ahead.

I love the colors & textures of yarn. I've been known to stop and pet the yarn because it just feels so good. Good article!

This is funny, I just found out that my granddaughter is crocheting in school and already made a blanket for community service. So I dug in my closet and gave her two suitcases full of worsted and a half completed blanket. Hope she keeps up with it!

I love to crochet. I crochet blankets for each new grandchild. One year, because she was born so closely to her sister (12 1/2 months apart), I forgot to crochet one granddaughter a blanket. One year she noticed that all of the other grandkids had one and she didn't. so at the age of 13, she finally got a blanket from Grandma. I crochet scarves too, but I never thought of decorating with crocheted items. Thanks!

Crocheting is so calming, too, plus the joy of creating something homemade and practical.

Yes, it's time to break out the crochet hooks and yarn! I just finished the final few rows of a simple afghan this evening. I'll probably post the pattern this evening. If I'm not on the computer, I'm on the couch working on one project or another.

My mother tried to teach me...tried being the operative word! My grandmother (as all grandmothers') was the queen of crochet!
