No matter what his personality, Dad is often under appreciated when it comes to gifts. Could it simply be, because men don't make as big of a deal out of their special day the way we women do or is the old joke true that for one day, he just wants to forget?
Regardless of the reason behind this strange phenomenon, if you don't want to get stuck giving Dad another horrible tie, he is going to throw into the back of the closet, or another bottle of Cologne that he wouldn't put on a skunk, here are a few quirky but fun Father's Day Gift ideas he may cherish.
For the Dad who was always the best in every Sport!
Is your Dad one of those High School or College Days Sport Superman, who loves to still talk about his glory Days? Well, why not let him relieve his glory days again. See if you can track down some old Photos of his "golden days" and create a big Honor Board with them. Make sure to add Ribbons, Medals and other Sports Type Trophies. Plus if he has any special Sports Heroes he simply idolizes, see if you can't find a few mementoes which could possible mesh into the themes. If you can afford them signed ones are even better. A lovely trophy with "You will always be our Champion!" on it to set in front of the entire setup and of course a matching cake with Ice-Cream.
Don't make it shoddy so, most men don't like knickknack styles, but do love to be honored. Put it into a nice Trophy styled frame, and he can hang it up anywhere he wishes.
For the amateur Comedian!
Does your Dad love to tell jokes? Is he a regular "Funny man"? If yes, why don't you record some of his best stuff on the fly and make a CD out of it? You can always make it fancy and have it actually pressed via cafepress.com Give it a snappy title and show him that you think he is worthy of "publication". Then toss together a BBQ and encourage a stand up comedy - joke off with him and some of his funny friends. Sit back and let them show off their talents.
For the Gamer in your house!
This is a 3 part gift that he may just love. Give him some Gift Certificates for "whine free gaming time" that he can cash in whenever he wants to just have some gaming time. Part two you may want to spring for a new Computer Gaming component for your PC Gamer or an upgrade of some sort for the console. Add a Gift Certificate for one of his favorite Game Stores for the next great Game he wants. Support of his enjoyment instead of constant complaints would just knock the socks of him.
For the outdoors' type of Dad!
Find what he enjoys the most and set up a "Day away" for him. If he enjoys your company do it together, but if he rather goes and spends some time alone doing something he really loves like fishing, canoeing, hiking etc, give him his special day without complaints to revive from all the stress he is suffering all the time. If he always wanted you to go with him, but it just isn't your thing, then why not surprise him for a change and do something he really loves. Open your mind, instead of your mouth, and let him show you what is so fantastic about the great outdoors activity he enjoys. Who knows, maybe his enjoyment will be catchy. The Rule is however, you cannot complain the entire day! This one is for dear old Dad! Period!
For a new Dad!
Moms this one goes to you directly. If he is still a new daddy to a fairly newborn baby, give him the one thing he probably would like more than anything in the world. A few hours of undisturbed sleep and his loving partner back in his arms for a little adult fun without the baby crying. With other words, set up a pamper your honey day and get a babysitter! Dig some of that sexy lingerie out that you used to wear and show him that you still have some hot loving in you. Being a new Dad is hard on a guy for many reasons. It is nice to have your wife back to yourself once in a while. Your Baby will be fine with a trusted Babysitter. You are not deserting him or her and you both will feel a lot better prepared after to continue with the loving parenting.
Just a thought for you to consider. I always hear how hard it is to buy for a guy, but really it isn't at all. If you take the time to just sit down and listen to your husband or dad once in a while and let him have the center stage unchallenged, you will find out all sorts of things he likes. Encourage him to give you lists of things to find for him when you have the time and never put his hobby down. One of the greatest gifts we can give our masculine protectors *yes that means our husbands and dads* is to continue to be in awe of them. Really listen to them and show them that they are worth our respect, our time and yes our effort to make them happy as well!
Just because you don't get it, doesn't mean it isn't important. It is a wonderful family that can name things the others like, at least a few of them, and if you cannot do this, then it is time to step back for a moment from your busy life and put some effort back into your family.
A final note to the *Dads* out there! Donating sperm to make a baby, aka becoming a father, doesn't make you a Dad. It is the behavior, the love and care you give to the child that earns you that title. You cannot act as if your family doesn't matter all year long and then suddenly on Father's Day expect them to rally around you with thoughtful gifts and words of love. You get what you put into it.
Happy Fathers Day!
