The pricing there is perfectly reasonable. My Dad and I eat together there pretty often, and we always get out for under $30 with the tip. It's nice to find somewhere that one can enjoy reasonable food at a great price. It costs about twice as much as eating cheap fast food in Williamsburg, and is infinitely better and healthier for you.
The food at Sal's by Victor is truly amazing. They have a large variety of pasta and pizza, as well as calzones, and seafood, veal, and chicken entres. I've eaten there on enough occasions to try more or less everything, and it's all wonderful. Their pasta sauces have a rich and delicious taste, while their pizzas remind me of a recent trip to New York - substantial, and out of this world. In addition to having the build-your-own pizza option, Sal's by Victor also offers some specialty pizzas for $9. These pizzas are 13 inch, round, thin crust pizzas, which is enough for one person's dinner and a box lunch the next day, or enough for two people if they've had appetizers. My personal favorite of these is the Pizza Caprese, which is topped with Mozzarella cheese, fresh tomatoes, olive oil, and some Italian seasonings. Pizzas that don't use a red sauce as a base for the toppings are often hard to find, and if done well, they are very good. The use of olive oil rather than tomato sauce prevents brings out the taste of the cheese. This fact combined with the excellent blend of seasoning used on the Pizza Caprese gives it a truly delicious flavor. For drinks, Sal's by Victor offers a nice variety of Italian wine as well as the usual assortment of soft drinks. Plus, the restaurant offers imported Italian carbonated bottled water (aqua frizzante), which sounds strange, but is actually very, very good. I prefer it over soda because it's not so distractingly sweet as to interfere with the taste of the food.
The restaurant is also very easy to find. It's located in the shopping center at the corner of Monticello Avenue and Richmond Road, which are probably the two most central roads in Williamsburg. It's also less than a five minute drive from Colonial Williamsburg, the historic downtown where shops and buildings are rebuilt or restored to resemble the town as it was in the early 1700s.
Sal's by Victor is a locally owned restaurant, not part of a chain, and should not be confused with other restaurants in the are called "Sal's." There is a small chain of cheap Italian sub and pizza shops that are just called "Sal's" in this part of Virginia. They are not connected to Sal's by Victor, and are not nearly as good.
