Great Reasons to Get Your Family to a Zoo This Summer

There is no lack of activities in which to partake during the summer months. During the cold winter months, the outdoors may be off limits unless you are building a snow man or ice skating, but during the summer, there are so many things to do it can become hard to prioritize. Should we go to the lake or on a picnic? Should we hit the slide or take to the trampoline? Here are some reasons why, when considering outdoor activities to do with your family this summer, you should definitely put the zoo toward the top of your extensive list.

The zoo offers you and your family a chance to get some much needed exercise. The word epidemic is becoming a little overused, but, the fact is, obesity in America is a problem. One of the best things about the summer is it affords you plenty of chance to get outside, but being outside doesn't do anyone any good if they are just laying out by the pool or sitting around the picnic basket. From animal habitat to animal habitat, at the zoo, you are going to get your share of exercise. The Columbus Zoo in Columbus, Ohio, for instance, sits on over two-hundred acres of land. No matter which path you take through your expedition, it adds up to a whole lot of walking.

While walking does a body good, this next zoo contribution might do it better. You do a lot of laughing at the zoo. In the day-to-day grind of it all, it is easy to overlook, and until you are in a place where it happens, you probably don't even notice it's gone, but in many households in the United States, laughter is a dying trend. There is too much work to do, too much stress over finances, too much marital strife. To beat the strain, the kids play in their rooms and the adults worry and brood in silence. At the zoo, you'll find yourselves doing something you may not have done in a while, laughing together. Watch an otter for one minute and attempt to hold your laughter. It's nearly impossible... and that's good for everyone.

Like the return of laughter, you'll probably feel a return of innocence as well. The zoo is one of the few places where an adult can feel like a kid again. The monkeys' antics may have your five-year-old in stitches, but it is likely your kid isn't the only one. Adults get a strange giddiness from watching crazy animals at the zoo that is almost on par with that of kids. Who knows why... but the sunshine isn't the only reason that nursing homes schedule outings for their residents to the local zoo.

As if the personal benefits aren't enough incentive, spending time and money at the zoo is actually beneficial to the world at large. Most of the things that we drop our hard-earned money on is for profit only, but a substantial amount of what a zoo collects in any given year goes right back into the well-being of the animal species and their habitats. When it comes to having a great time and giving back to the world at the same time, you can't do much better than an outing at your local zoo.
