Great Reasons to Homeschool Your Child

Kevin Nurmi
Many people wonder what the advantages to homeschooling really are. Why not just put them on the bus, and get them out into the world for a few hours every day? Schools may not be exactly what you think they are, and may not be benefiting your child as well as you would like.

Most schools, especially for older children, require that they wake up at an ungodly hour in the morning. Then, after most likely skipping breakfast just to get a few extra minutes of sleep, you have to send them off with countless instructions. You then sit around the house all day wondering where they are, and if they are okay. By homeschooling your child you have more control over whom and what teaches your child, and what they learn. You then can follow the growth and development of your child in a way you never imagined. You get to decide what your child needs to learn, molding the curriculum to your individual child as no one else can. Who knows better then you what your child needs?

Your child may come home, telling you about all the kids in his class. That's right, up to thirty children might be in one classroom alone. If your child is in a higher grade, and switches classes every forty five minutes, you can easily do the math and realize that means less then two minutes of individual attention for each student in the class. By keeping your child home to be schooled, they get all day one-on-one attention that they would not get in any public school.

Every child is not the same. What may take one child five minutes may take another five hours. At public schools, they do not have that option. They either learn what they are assigned in the time frame they are given, or they do not learn it at all. At home, there are no fixed amounts of time given to each subject. If your child needs more time to learn something, then you are able to give them that time needed. They will not have to be embarrassed or feel less intelligent just because they do not understand something as quickly as other students. They will have time to excel in every subject, not just the ones they pick up on quickest.

Homeschooling your child can become a great bonding time. Parents are able to be involved with every field trip, experiment and project, because it works around their schedule. Parents are able to be involved in every aspect of their child's education. The entire family gets to spend more quality time together, while parents introduce their child to the benefits of learning and getting a wonderful education. Homeschooling also gives children a better outlook on education because there are no negatives like bullies or mean teachers

A child that is home schooled is able to make decisions based on what he or she really thinks, and not what they think their friends would do. Many people don't realize the pressure put on even the youngest of students by their peers. A home schooled child has nothing to prove to peers or other children. He can be confident that whatever decision he makes will be respected and dealt with in a civil matter.

Parents who home school their children also have the ability to teach their children more about their beliefs. No laws involved in homeschooling say that a parent cannot incorporate religious beliefs like they say about public schools. Children are also more likely to understand their religious standpoint because no one is telling them that they cannot say or do things associated with their religion. No confusion arises in the child's mind, and everything being taught is also always being practiced.

As you can see, homeschooling offers many benefits. You are able to cater your child's learning to what your child needs. You have more influence over what he or she learns and how their day goes. Making the decision to home school is a big step, but if handled correctly, can have a lifetime of benefits.
