Pamela Eckelbarger
A "superfood" is defined as food with high phytonutrient content that many believe will improve health if consumed regularly. Consumption of superfoods is becoming a pop-culture icon; popular among all health conscious people, superfoods are changing our society. One of the most powerful superfoods available is kelp...keep reading to learn about the health benefits of this amazing superfood.

Kelp is full of nutrients and can be an interesting way to spice up your dinner plate as well as keep healthy. However, before beginning consumption of any superfood, you should discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor; some medical conditions or pregnancy can affect the superfoods you should eat.

As a superfood, kelp can improve thyroid function, which is important in maintaining a state of homeostasis in the body. Iodine regularity is important in thyroid function, and kelp is the superfood that will maintain the delicate balance between too much and too little iodine in the body. Make sure to follow the instructions on the labeling when consuming kelp as a superfood.

Proper thyroid function also maintains weight, so eating kelp as a superfood is a great way to keep from gaining too much weight; besides, when you're eating brown algae you aren't too likely to get fat.

Kelp is a great source of folate which reduces the levels of the protein homeocysteine in the body. (High homeocysteine levels are often associated with inflammation and damage to blood vessels. The superfood kelp is full of folate.)

Kelp can also reduce the odds of getting breast cancer for women because kelp is thought to have anti-estrogen effects which could help with prevention. Not developing breast cancer is a lifelong health goal of all women, so make sure to eat the superfood kelp.

Consuming folate can also lower the odds of passing on the birth defect known as spina bifida. Pregnant women who aren't sure that they are getting enough folate from superfoods should talk with their physician about taking the supplement folic acid.

Now that you understand the health benefits of kelp as a superfood, start eating it! Though the deep sea algae kelp is an excellent source of nutrition, you must remember that it is possible to have too much of a good thing. Remember before starting any new diet that you should confer with your family physician to make sure that your personal health and nutrition needs will be meant. Enjoy eating the beneficial superfood, kelp!
