Great Study Sites for Students in Ann Arbor, Michigan

Ainsley Patterson
Ann Arbor, Michigan, is home to the University of Michigan, one of the nation's top public universities. The University of Michigan didn't become one of the top public universities in the nation by admitting students who don't work hard. So, where can those hard-working students go to study? There are lots of great places for U of M students to go around Ann Arbor to get their study on. Here is a list of my 5 favorite places around Ann Arbor to study.

Denny's Restaurant on Washtenaw Avenue
If you're the kind of person who likes to eat and/or smoke while you study then Denny's is a great place for you to go. Open 24 hours a day Denny's will be there the night before a big exam, a major paper is due, or when you simply need to pull an all-nighter to catch up on some reading for a class. You won't have to take a break to get up and get a soda, a waiter will refill it for you, and it is typically pretty quiet late at night and early in the morning.

Starbucks in the Arborland Mall
This particular Starbucks is open 24 hours a day. The endless cups of coffee you drink while pulling an all-nighter are right at hand when you study at Starbucks. Also, Starbucks is generally quieter than a restaurant, so if you are easily distracted, Starbucks may be a good place for you to study if you need to get out of the house.

The Michigan Union
Many U of M students already utilize this great study site, but if you don't already you should. The Michigan Union has everything you need to study right at your fingertips. If you get hungry there are four restaurants and a cookie shop to choose from. If you run out of ink in your pen while jotting notes then you can walk over to the bookstore to grab a new one. If you don't have a laptop and you need to find something on the internet then you can use one of the several iMacs or Dells they have there.

The Fishbowl in Angell Hall
The computer lab in Angell Hall, known as the Fishbowl by U of M students is a great place to study because there are computers and printers to use as well as coffee and snack vending machines right down the hall. The Fishbowl can be pretty busy and noisy during the day, but you can bring a set of headphones and listen to your favorite music to drowned out the sound. At night, with the exception of exam time, it is pretty low key. There isn't a whole lot of desk space with the computers being there, so if you need to spread out a lot of books and notebooks this isn't the place for you, but if you need to do internet research, write a paper, or just study some notes then the Fishbowl is a great study place.

Espresso Royale on State Street
There are many Espresso Royales in the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti area, but this one is great for studying because you can go further back in the cafe to escape from the noise of their everyday business. I actually had a class that was held here and we had no problem discussing our daily topics without noisy interruptions. And just like Starbucks there is plenty of coffee to keep you going.

Hopefully if you are a student in Ann Arbor and you find yourself needing to get out of the house to study you'll try one of these great places. Now go get your study on!
