First Person Shooter (FPS) Games - Now in lots of games like Call of Duty, Battlefield, and Halo, players are able to go online and do battle with others from around the world. This is a great aspect of gameplay for everyone. That is so long as everyone is playing fairly, and not using hacks and cheats online. And also for team based modes where players get online just to annoy other people. The solution I've thought of to this is very simple, and will also open up jobs to people who enjoy playing video games. Now, if it's already being done, then I apologize for assuming that it is not.
FPS games should introduce, player moderators. Now these players would be online and placed in matches randomly, just as regular players would. But there main purpose (besides actually playing the game) would be to weed out cheaters and antagonist players. Having these moderators would make it easier to catch cheaters, as they could see them in action as well as boot them from the game immediately, as well as keep a record of their IP address and send it to the company.
These players could also catch players antagonizing people with team kills and remove them from the game as well. It would be a different situation if it was an accident, but if one player is harassing one or more other players with team kills, then they deserve to be removed. This would make it far easier to keep track of what's going on in game and fix the issue right then and there. And like I said, this would also open up jobs to the general public to be apart of the video game industry. The only thing that would need to be done to keep cheaters and dirty players from recognizing them is to leave all of their profile info untouched. Nothing should be added to indicate what they are doing when they are playing online other than what other players would already be able to see. There wouldn't even be a need to get the people who play the best at the game to be player mods, but just anyone who enjoys playing the game.
Now as far as punishment, this is what I think would work. The first offense would get the player's IP blocked from playing that game online for 1 week. The subsequent offense would be banned from all online play for 2 weeks, then the third would be 3 weeks. A fourth offense would be an indefinite ban from play online. This would be a very fair system that would weed out players who cause trouble. Hopefully some of the higher ups in the game industry will catch wind of this at some point and time.
Platformer Games - There's not really much I can suggest for these, but I do have a few ideas. Being that lots of upcoming platform games will be distributed via download, why not allow bigger numbers of players on screen simultaneously? Instead of having only four to maybe eight players, why not push it to about let's say, thirty-two players on one map at a time playing together? You know that the systems you're developing for are capable of doing it, but no one is pushing the limit so far, at least not that I've seen.
And for games that don't actually have that many characters, or even generic characters like Sonic for example, why not use all of the characters that you have ever created, with their varying and different abilities, make them all play together through a game working with each other to complete each level. This would work well for Mario, and Megaman too. Too bad the companies haven't really tried to do this. You should push to get the most out of the hardware through gameplay as well as graphics.
Fighting Games - Now this being one of my favorite types of games to play, I'm getting tired of seeing rehashes or newer games with reverted and lessened features. That as well as seeing the over usage of the same characters though they don't gain very many new abilities or moves. That is more directed toward Capcom with their over usage of the character Ryu (from Street Fighter) through many different fighting series, especially in the Marvel vs. Capcom series, all of the games after Marvel Superheroes vs. Street Fighter. If the same characters are going to be reused in a main role constantly, then their moves should be updated constantly, it's only fair to the players.
It would also be nice if there were more fighting games that allowed people to make their own characters, along with creating introductions, rivals, selecting/making their moves list, and their attributes. This would get far more people into playing fighting games, and it would be cool to see the many different user created characters.
I also wish that fighting games would go back to characters having their own dedicated stages. Though fighting characters all over the world is great, it really lacks the feeling of "I'm coming to your home to beat you." I know I'd pay a decent price for fighting games with the features I wrote about.
Roleplaying Games (RPG) - More RPGs should follow a play style similar to that of the Final Fantasy games. But that doesn't mean that they should be clones of it. There should also be more games that follow the suit of the Orge Battle series (my favorite among these is Orge Battle 64 ). It was an RPG, but it also had elements that made it a Real-Time Strategy Game. If more RPG makers used these games as base ideas for their own games, they would ultimately make the best RPG to ever be played. It would be cool if someone would develop a game that used the RTS elements of Ogre Battle for the main landscape gameplay, including the level up, character promotion (upgrade) system. And then for bosses and other important battles the game would revert to a Final Fantasy style set up allowing the player to pick and choose the techniques their character's used in these specific situations. I know it would be a lot of work, but if it is executed right, then it would quite possibly top Final Fantasy VII . If there are any games out that like this, then please inform me of them so I can play them.
Real-Time Strategy (RTS) - Now for RTS, I have only one idea. I can't even say that I know it hasn't been done, because I haven't play many RTS style games, though I do like the genre, but I've never really found very many interesting RTS games. My biggest and only idea for this game genre, make a game that allows eight different players, each controlling their own army, battle each other for supremacy all at once. It doesn't matter what time line or universe the game is based on, who the characters are or what weapons will be used. Just make a game that allows more than 2 to 4 people to have their armies battling other people, and allow players to make emblems for their armies. That would make for a really interesting game, and it would truly push the boundaries of the current market consoles, maybe even the next gens when we find out everything about them. That would be the ultimate RTS in my opinion.
Now that's all I have for now, but as I said, this article is the first of a series of articles about unused or under used game ideas. I'll do some on specific game franchises, others like this on different game genres, pretty much anything that I can think of dealing with video games. My next article however, will deal more with ways game companies can interact with players better and make even better games. Thank you for your time reading, and please, if this interests you, leave comments, or subscribe so you can keep up with my work. I hope you enjoyed the reading.
