Great Video Game Ideas Not Used 6

Video Game Radio Edition

Andre Ratchford

Thank you again for taking the time to read, and possibly endorse, another installment of "Great Video Game Ideas Not Used". This time around, I'm not going to deal directly with video games themselves, but other ways for the gaming industry to create jobs. Now, I hope that this particular article gets lots of attention. Now, this is something that I'm honestly surprised hasn't been really done yet, but for a fully dedicated radio station for video games to be made.

Now firstly, I will acknowledge the existence of Orange Lounge Radio, which is an internet based video game radio station which is dedicated to the gaming lifestyle and video games. I think it's the only one, and it is on the internet, but I have yet to find any others that aren't solely for video game music or that are main stream and have an actual radio frequency. There is also Chatterbox Video Game Radio which airs Tuesday Nights at 12am EST in Phoenix, Arizona on 1100 AM frequency. They also simulcast on the net so people can listen in. These things I think are great, and I am in full support of them, hopefully they will help expand game radio.

Now, to get to the true purpose of this article, to talk about the possible expansion of game radio. As for me, I think that there should be a fully dedicated video game radio station that is online, as well as on radios across the world through AM or FM frequency. And this station should be run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I've even got show ideas that I think would compliment this game radio station thought very well. And I even have a few thoughts on the potential hosts for such shows to be broadcast, this based on things I've seen or heard then in. It honestly surprises me that game companies haven't actually tried to do this, or at least that I haven't found any info on it in my research which indicates they have.

As far as show ideas, I've come up with this; Classic Gaming Talk, Up and Coming, VG Song Requests, VG Song Remixes, Alternative Gaming, Current Look, Chatting It Up, Sequelitis (this idea comes from Egoraptor on Youtube), Spill Your Ideas, Handheld Corner, What They Should Have Done, Regretfully Undone, El Cheapo Gamer, Weekend Wammy, Non-Gamer Chat Session, VG Classifieds and Late Night Playlist. I'll explain the ideas in a moment, though I think most of the names are self-explanatory. Gaming needs to hit the airwaves in more than just TV and Movies. I've thought plenty of times that I'd like to hear about games while I'm driving from one place to another. I'd also like to call in and give my thoughts on different games with other people who have interests in them where it can be heard everywhere. Now to move on to my explanations.

Classic GamingTalk '" This would be a show that reminisces and talks about the games of the past. All consoles that aren't current generation, or games are no longer made for would be covered during this show. I'd figure that it would be about a 2 to 3 hour show, probably in the mornings. I don't have any ideas for who should host this, but I'm sure there are plenty of game enthusiast that would gladly jump on this one.

Up and Coming '" This couldn't be anymore obvious if I wanted it to be. This show would cover new games, accessories, and consoles that are going to hit the market. Listeners would be able to call in and give their two cents after a game has been previewed. Another one that I'm not sure who would be the host for, but then again, plenty of players would love this job. This segment would be no less than 3 hours.

VG Song Requests '" A show for listeners to call in and name songs that they would like to here from video games that they have played. This segment would be about an hour long, again, no suggestions about hosts.

VG Song Remixes '" Now this would be an interesting show because it would feature redone, revamped, and remixed video game songs that are on the net as well as tell people where to find these particular songs. Artists that redo songs would be encouraged to notify the station of their songs through email prior to the broadcast. Now for this segment, I have a suggestion for host, and that would be Tom Fulp of newgrounds.com. I just think it would be appropriate for him, seems to fit his personality from what I've seen and read. This I would expect to be an hour long.

Alternative Gaming '" This show would cover games found on the web that can be played on computer, phone or anywhere else other than a standard console. Listeners would also be able to call in and suggest games that they have found on the net to be featured. This too would be something that I'd think Tom Fulp would be appropriate to host. I'd say that this would probably be about an hour and a half long.

Current Look '" Now this would definitely be a show for reviews of current games that are on the market or that have been recently released. I think to cover two to three games per show, it would take about 2 hours, with listener call included. The person that I feel would possibly fit best in this show would be MegaGWolf from Youtube.

Chatting It Up '" Quite easily seen as the "talk show" of the video game station. This show would cover all sorts of subjects, not just specifically gaming, but it would be mostly other things that interests gamers. This would probably be an hour long segment to which I think would also suit MegaGWolf and/or Egoraptor.

Sequelitis '" Now this I admittedly got from Egoraptor on Youtube. He did a comparison of Casltevania and Castlevania 2. So, this show would be for comparisons of games that are in the same series, whether they be recent or old, improvements or fails. And this would definitely be Egoraptor's show to do. He's a funny guy, and I think having people call in to comment after he's had his say about certain games will produce very good results. Not exactly sure on how long it should be, but it would be a shame not to include it anywhere on the station.

Spill Your Ideas '" This show, this would be my baby, and I would be the host, then again, Egoraptor could possibly do this too, and probably better than me, but I'd want to be at least involved in this show in some way. The purpose of this show would be to allow gamers and others to talk about their well thought video game ideas, whether it be for an original game, or for something that already exists. This would definitely only be an hour long show.

Handheld Corner '" A show dedicated to handheld video games and the consoles that go along with them. This would apply to old as well as newer games. Not exactly sure on who would host, or even how long the show would be, but maybe this would be a smaller segment of another show.

What They Should Have Done '" This would be a show that speaks about the worst game mishaps that were created. Oh and for the many that there are, there are plenty of ways so many games could easily have been improved. Now this I think that Egoraptor, MegaGWolf, and myself would be on together. I'm sure that the three of us would have different standpoints and reasoning for what we say about certain games which would ultimately draw in a lot of attention. Or the Angry Video Game Nerd could do it.

Regretfully Undone '" This segment would cover games that were in the making, but just never actually got finished. Games that probably would have sold well and been successful had they actually been completed. This would be another thing I'd like to have a hand in.

El Cheapo Gamer '" This would also be a segment that would speak to me. El Cheapo Gamer would pertain to places that players could by games, consoles, and accessories for cheap, as well as deals that are being advertised for games by stores. With my extensive knowledge in finding dirt cheap but good games, I'd gladly take up the mantle on this one.

Weekend Wammy '" Obviously a weekend show, Weekend Wammy would be to notify players of online gaming match ups for the week. This would give players a chance to prepare for all planned gaming events in their area and online. I would say that I'd give this to another person I've seen on Youtube, he's under the name FowlJerms. He's a comedian, so I know his colorful commentary would definitely add to the announcements.

Non-Gamer Chat Session '" This would also be a weekend show, and it would give those who don't play games a chance to give their input on the gaming industry, whether they approve or disapprove. Anything that non-gamers want to say to the gaming public would be found here.

VG Classifieds '" A segment that would play 4 times a day every day at 6am, 12pm, 6pm and 12am EST, announcing jobs in the gaming industry and locations to apply for such jobs. This would give the general public a better chance to find jobs in the industry. With the number of scams that promise people jobs in gaming, this would help deter the problem somewhat.

Late Night Playlist '" This is a playlist of songs that listeners have voted on that would play in rotation overnight until 5am EST. This shows wouldn't even need to have a host, but it would be a good idea to include one anyway, especially with all of the gamers that stay up late night.

Seeing as all of these show/segment ideas are just that, ideas...it would be great to have this implemented. I'd definitely be on board for something like this. I can't say the same for the people that I named, but I don't think that they would have anything against it. In my opinion, games should have a truly dedicated radio station on air, and online. There are times when I don't have enough time to just sit and read a magazine to know about all of the upcoming games, or the good, bad, and ugly of games currently out.

The major selling point for this would be that gamers would get something that they want, games companies would make more money, and it would create so many jobs for the gaming public, well the public in general. Hopefully if Orange Lounge Radio gets an on air frequency, or Chatterbox Radio becomes an all day station, then they would be willing to help the market for video game radio expand, and take some of my suggestions and use them. I wouldn't mind starting an internet radio station dedicated to games that would hopefully advance passed being on the net only. It would feel great to be able to help the industry.

Though this is just me musing, but I hope that people can see the usefulness of this type of station. I don't even think satellite radio has a gaming only station, at least I've never heard of there being one. I will do a few example shows in future articles, I pretty much have the ideas already, just need to put them together. Thank you for your time, and please, if you can, post the link to this article everywhere that you blog, or any forums that you are apart of. Word needs to spread, and it needs to spread quickly. I hope you enjoyed it, and thank you again.
