Great Virginia Summer Festivals, 2007

Summer, 2007 Festivals in Virginia

Gwyn Guess
Virginia in the summertime is stunning. Its highland slopes are quite pleasant and the seacoast is refreshing with its breezes and beaches. This state has quite a few festivals to usher in sumertime and they cover a wide range of celebrations including music, wine-making, and just plain having fun. Many of them take place in the highlands of the Bluegrass Mountains that is worth a trip by itself--especially in the summer.

This July 1 and 2, from 1 a.m. to 6 p.m. the Wine Down the Music Trail Festival celebrates both wine and music on 80 acres right in the middle of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. There's bocce ball playing, wine tastings from the best Virginia wineries and even gourmet fare to be enjoyed here. All the while, attendees will be able to enjoy blue grass, folk, Irish, Old-Time and even some Blues music by live performers. For people who are art lovers, area craftsmen will be showing their wares.
Their web site has literally dozens of bed and breakfasts and inns in the area where people can stay for the weekend. Contact them by phone or email.

The Nelson county Summer Festival takes place in middle Virginia this year on the grounds of the historic Oak Ridge Mansion grounds. This festival last two days from June 23-June 24, Saturday and Sunday. There will be a rural living tent were local products and farm animals are housed and gardening and jam items will be sold. It's like an old-time country fair with a music stage, and many games and activities for children. It's conveniently wheelchair-accessible. There will also be award-winning wines from eight local vineyards available for tasting with a $7 charge. Those interested should call(800) 282-8223 or contact the Festival organizers by email.

The Hernden festival takes place this June, starting May 31 and running through June 3, 2007. It draws thousands of people from the Washington D.C. area and takes place in the historic downtown area. This festival is really like a county fair because of how many activities are featured. Carnival rides, games and a model railway exhibit will satisfy the children, while their parents can participate in 10k and 5k races, attend a business exposition, and see arts and crafts in a dedicated area. There's a special emphasis on fine art in a separate division. Be advised that there are no animals, glass bottles, or alcoholic drinks are allowed here. Call them if there's information not on the web site, at 703-787-7300.
