Great Ways to Speed Up Your Metabolism

Skyler Raine
These are just three simple ways to give your metabolism that extra boost it needs so that you can be on your way to a healthier, stronger, and more beautiful body.

Eat breakfast.

How many times have we heard "Start your day right and eat a hearty, healthy breakfast"?

Studies have shown that eating breakfast increases metabolism. Choose a good high protein breakfast that will prevent you from feeling sluggish all morning and help you get moving all morning. Eating a good breakfast will also prevent you from overeating at lunchtime.

Snack more.

Start eating small meals throughout the day instead of just having two or three heavy meals at three or four hour intervals. Your metabolism actually increases as your body digests the food you had consumed. Make sure that the meals you have are full of lean protein, low on sodium, sugar, and fat, and high in fiber content.

Never skip meals. When you deprive yourself of food, you only bring down your metabolic rate. Think of your body as a car and food as fuel. If there is no fuel in the tank, the car will not run. Your body will also go on defensive mode and will start storing fat and carbohydrates instead of burning them off when you starve yourself.

Be more active.

Get off the couch, let go of the remote control, and just get moving. Do household chores; take out the garbage, clean the yard, do some gardening. When you go to the grocery store, do the pushing with the shopping cart. Start walking. Walk the dog everyday. If you are going somewhere only a short distance away, walk instead of driving or taking a cab.

Establish a regular exercise routine if you feel like going on to the next level. Take your newly found habit of walking and increase it to 30 minutes each day. You can also incorporate other aerobic exercises that will increase your heart rate and burn calories. Include weight training in your routine to build up those muscles. Even when you are resting, your body will still continue to burn off calories.

Sleep well.

Do not deprive yourself of sleep. Studies have shown that sleep loss leads to a number of health problems like obesity and heart disease. Sleep is the body's way of restoring itself and making it ready to go the next day. Lack of sleep increases hunger and leads to overeating. You will also feel drowsy and heavy all day long, making you unfit to work, exercise, and properly function.
