Great Ways to Stretch Your Decorating Budget

Jennifer Wagner

If you're looking for simple ways to stretch your decorating dollar, you've come to the right place! We've got an arsenal of budget decorating ideas that will help you get the look you want, for less. By learning which items are worth investing in, and which ones should be avoided, you'll see that it's fairly to simple to stretch your decorating budget.

Choose solid colored furniture

When placing furniture in a room that will be decorated on the cheap, it's always best to use solid colors. This will help to keep things neutral, making it much easier (and less expensive) to decorate around. You can always add a splash of color with a pretty printed slipcover or decorative accent pillows.

Worth the splurge

As experience has shown, some things are simply worth paying the money for. As a 'budget expert' I take great pride in being frugal. There are some things that you simply don't have to pay full price for! On the other hand, when it comes to key pieces of furniture such as the sofa, bed, or other furnishing that will get extensive use, it's worth the money to buy a solid, well constructed piece. You'll stretch your decorating budget in the long run, as it won't need to be replaced.

Smart accessories

When choosing which accessories to use, remember this: Less is more. An attractive vase filled with fresh flowers is not only less expensive than a collection of knick knacks, it will look better too. A stack of books, a potted plant, or a framed family portrait are things that will spruce up your space, without costing a lot of money.

Cheap artwork

Head out to your local flea market or antique store and pick up several decorative frames. They don't have to all be the same; each one should be unique. Take them home, remove the backing and glass, and hang them in an attractive grouping on the wall. This is an especially nice budget decorating idea when the frames are set against a bold paint color.

Fresh paint

Whenever the topic of decorating on a budget is raised, the first thing that comes to mind is paint. A new paint color will dramatically change the look of any room, and it's inexpensive too! A gallon of paint will cost around $ 20.00, and the supplies to finish the job are affordable. In as little as a day, you can repaint an entire room and be amazed at the impressive results.

Double duty furniture

One of the best ways to stretch your decorating budget is to buy furniture that serves more than one purpose. For example, an ottoman can be used to prop up your feet, store items inside, and it makes a comfortable spot to sit in an emergency. A wooden bench has room for storage underneath, provides seating, and is decorative, as well. With a little imagination, you can find multiple uses for many of the things you buy.

Window treatments

Curtains, drapes, and blinds are expensive to buy, and can quickly eat up your decorating budget. To help save money, get creative and make something yourself. No sewing required! There are many unexpected materials that can transformed into a one-of-a-kind window treatment. Scarves, sheets, placemats, and even cabinet doors can take on a new life and make a great addition to any room. Get more 'Simple and Unique Window Treatment Ideas'.

As you can see, with a little creativity and a bit of smart shopping, it's fairly to simple to stretch your decorating budget.
