Great Wines with Unusual Names

Good Wine Doesn't Have to Be Boring

Sally Ann Murphy
Great wines don't need to come with snobbish sounding names (although those can be tasty, too). Sometimes a fun, unusual wine name makes an excellent bottle of wine just that much more fun to drink. Looking for good wines with unusual names to serve at your next dinner party or get together? Try out a few of the wines below.

Cat's Pee on a Gooseberry Bush 2008
This New Zealand classic wine is brought to you by Coopers Creek, a lovely white wine with an unusual name your guests are sure to enjoy. (For your wine snob friends, both cat's pee and gooseberry are terms used to describe the flavors of some Sauvignon Blanc wines.) This particular Sauvignon Blanc has aromas of lime and melon, and flavors such as grapefruit and vanilla, without even a hint of cat's pee. Enjoy!

Marilyn Merlot 2007
California's Marilyn Wines released its twentieth vintage in 2006, and this red wine is worthy of the iconic name it bears. The 2007 Merlot is a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, which gives the red wine a bit more structure while leaving in place everything you could want from a robust Merlot. Aromas of violets and black cherries are followed by flavors that include black plum, vanilla and oak. This is a great choice to serve with hearty dishes such as chili or wild game.

Red Head Studio Barrel Monkey Shiraz
This big red wine is more fun than, you guessed it, a barrel full of monkeys! If you enjoy flavors of black cherry and blueberries, and aromas that include rosemary, clove and black pepper, be sure to give this Australian Shiraz a try. It will pair well with lamb or venison dishes.

The Stump Jump Sticky 2008

A buttery, rich Chardonnay from D'Arenberg Wines that is sure to light up any dinner party or event. This Australian white starts off with aromas of honey, green apples and stone fruits, followed by flavors of caramel, oak and spice. Despite its unusual name it is a lovely, well balanced wine.

Goats Do Roam Goat-Roti
A blend of Syrah and Viognier, this South African red is an amazing choice when you need a wine with an unusual name that can hold its own against a hearty meal. It has aromas of both floral and spice, and flavors that include black currant, raspberries and black pepper. (The name is a play on Cotes du Rhone.)

Seven Deadly Zins

The 2007 Zinfandel from this California winery is a sure bet for sharing with friends over almost any meal. Starting off with aromas of black plum and blackberries and following up with flavors of blackberries and spice, this Zinfandel is wonderful when paired with steak and beef dishes.

Mollydooker Two Left Feet 2008
If you are looking for a spicy red wine to serve at your next party, try this Australian blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. This dark purple wine has aromas of sandalwood and caramel, and flavors that include blueberries, strawberries, and even chocolate. Mollydooker wines, no matter how unusual the name, seldom disappoint and this red blend is no exception.

Mommy's Time Out Pinot Grigio
This yummy white is a personal favorite and a perfect pick for a girls' night out get together. This is a light and fruity Italian Pinot Grigio, with aromas of lemon and apple, and flavors of pear and vanilla. A great choice of wine with an unusual name to serve with seafood or fruit appetizers.
