Greatest Day of the Year for Football

David Kenny
Every year on the fourth Thursday of November the NFL plays football for everyone to watch while eating food with
their families. There is a long history in the Thanksgiving Day football games. Going back all the way to Detroit and Green Bay back in the early 1960's, most of the time the NFL has the same traditional teams on Thanksgiving. The Dallas Cowboys and the Detroit Lions have always been the teams selected to play on Thanksgiving. Dallas and Detroit usually play against the Green Bay Packers and the Washington Redskins. Not more than five years ago the NFL was only playing two games on thanksgiving, but now the NFL gives everyone three games. The Thanksgiving games are the only games of the year, besides the Superbowl, that the NFL opens up its half-time show for the home viewers. The NFL does a great job on keeping the game and half-time shows family orientated. The NFL wants the entire family to be able to sit down together and watch a great and entertaining football game.

For the last five games that the Detroit Lions have played on Thanksgiving they have lost by a total of 179 to 72. The NFL needs to schedule the Detroit Lions Thanksgiving Day games better to give them a better chance for a win or even just to keep the games closer and more interesting for the fans. This year the Detroit Lions play the Green Bay Packers for the early game on Thanksgiving. The Lions are coming off their best win of the season after high powered passing attack by rookie Matthew Stafford. Stafford broke rookie records last week by throwing for five touchdown passes and 422 passing yards in a last second win against the Cleveland Browns. Even after coming off of their biggest win of the season, the Detroit Lions were no match for the Green Bay Packers losing another Thanksgiving to them 34 to 12.

On the second game of thanksgiving was between the Oakland Raiders and the Dallas Cowboys. The Raiders were also coming off their most impressive win against the 7-2 Cincinnati Bengals. The Raiders could not keep any momentum after their big win to use when playing the Dallas Cowboys. The NFL has a great idea on play football games on Thanksgiving; they just need to schedule the games that are more competitive for the fans to watch while eating turkey with their families. Pick more games with teams with winning records.
