Is there any one guitarist that stands out from the rest? Everyone has their favorite guitarist, but there are many greats. Each generation has a new guitarist that adds something new and unique to the music world. New techniques and sounds, plus stage presence and performance are what truly make a guitarist great.

Jimi Hendrix

No great guitarist list would be complete without Hendrix. His songs and classic licks made him the best of his day and too many no one has come close since. The 1960s belonged to Hendrix. His performances were amazing. Never did he fail to keep a crowd on their feet. As with many great musicians, drugs ended his life, but his music lives on to inspire other guitarists.

B.B. King

B.B. King is definitely the king of blues. No one can make a guitar sing the blues quite like him. He is truly the whole package. Not only is he a great guitarist, but a true musician. King writes, plays, and sings, making the blues come alive with his distinctive sound.

Eric Clapton

Clapton is a true master of his craft. There seems to be nothing he can't do. From harder rock to more mellow sounds, his talent shines through. Unlike some guitarists, he never over does it, but plays right on the edge. This is what makes him truly great. Many guitarists consider it an honor to play with him.

Carlos Santana

Santana has to be one of the absolute greatest guitarists. His music has spread across many genres including, rock, pop, country, and rap. Many people discovered his unique sound by hearing him paired with their favorite band or singer. Artists such as Steven Tyler, Michelle Branch, and Rob Thomas are just a few of the artists Santana has played with.

Joe Perry

Most people know Joe Perry as the lead guitarist in Aerosmith. He has also paired with other artists for award shows and special performances. He knows how to work a crowd and is part of what has made Aerosmith a truly lasting band.

Slash

Many people probably know Slash from the Guitar Hero III commercials. He wasn't featured on the commercial for nothing. He truly is a pro. Formerly with Guns N' Roses and currently with Velvet Revolver, Slash's unique licks and riffs have helped to make both bands famous. His work is never boring and never the same, signs of a truly talented guitarist.

These are by no means all the great guitarists. These are just some of the more widely known. Check RollingStone.com and VH1.com for more extensive lists. Simply type "greatest guitarists" in the search box.
