Greatest Quarteback of All Time

Short List of Candidates

Olivia Cummings
There is much debate concerning who is the greatest quarterback of all time. A large portion of the debate centers around how you determine greatness. Is it the number of games won? The number of TD's thrown? Passer Rating? or should it be based simply on the number of Super Bowls won?

Based strictly on the number of Super Bowl wins the list would be narrowed down very quickly. Both Joe Montana and Terry Bradshaw have won 4 Super Bowls, more than anyone else. Tom Brady and Troy Aikman both have three wins in their column. All four of these men were great quarterbacks, on great teams. Each is deserving of consideration. To make this fair and open to all worthy of consideration, the judging must be done on a number of issues. Certainly a Super Bowl win is a plus, in fact we will not consider any quarterback who has not won a Super Bowl. This takes the list of candidates down to just 27 names. Only 10 men have won multiple Super Bowls. But the criteria goes further. Wins and losses, or more accurately, how many more wins than losses did the quarterback have? The same with touchdowns and interceptions, points will be awarded for every one TD more than interceptions thrown in the quarterbacks career. Finally, we will add in the lifetime passer rating for the quarterback. Add these all together and you have an impressive list of quarterbacks, but just who came out at number one?

Let's start at the bottom of our list;

27. Joe Namath -70.5 , only two QB's had a negative score, and Broadway Joe came in with the lowest. In his career Namath lost 1 more game than won and threw 47 more interceptions than touchdowns.
26. Jim Plunkett -20.5 , won 2 Super Bowls, but had a passer rating of 67.5, beating out only Joe Namath in that category.
25. Trent Dilfer 35.2
24. Doug Williams 89.4 One great Super Bowl, but won only 38 games in his career.
23. Ken Stabler 92.3 The snake, found ways to win, but not rank high in this listing
22. Jim McMahon 189.2 - Had his brief period of glory with those amazing Bears of the mid-1980's

20. Mark Rypien 198.9
19. Joe Theisman 210.4
18. Bart Starr 210.5 - won the first two Super Bowls and played in a day when the position required a little more toughness than finesse.

2. Peyton Manning 763.2 Still in his prime, Manning has amassed great number by being a true master of the game.
1. Brett Favre 771.6 While he only has one Super Bowl victory, he also has more wins than any other QB in history, as well as more TD's than anyone else. With a lifetime passer rating of 86.6, Brett Favre's endurance lands him at the top of a most impressive list.
