Darrin Atkins
It takes a lot of effort and dedication to be successful in college football. After all, your opponent every week wants to win as much as you and your team, if not more so. These college football coaches are considered by many to be the best ever.

The best college football coaches get paid the most money. This is because universities and their alumni love it when their teams win lots of games and win conference titles and national championships. If you want to be successful, consider the hard work and strategies used by the following coaches.

Pete Carroll

Pete Carroll is synonymous with USC football and the Trojans have had remarkable success under his head-coaching leadership. No team can match the success of USC over the past 15 years. From 2002 to 2008, USC has either won a share of the Pac-10 conference championship or won it outright, according to collegefootballpoll.com. Carroll has led the Trojans to two national championships, so far.

Urban Meyer

Florida Gators head coach Urban Meyer is considered by many to be the best college football coach in the world these days. That is because he has led them to two national championships in the last three years, in 2006 and 2008, and he has an excellent chance of doing it again at the end of the 2009 regular season. If he achieves that extraordinary feat, consider him to be the best college football coach of all time.

Bob Stoops

Bob Stoops is the coach of the Oklahoma Sooners and he is likely to replicate the incredible success of Barry Switzer at Oklahoma. Stoops led the Sooners to a national title in 2000 and the Sooners won six Big 12 conference championships from 2000-2008, according to Wikipedia.

Nick Saban

Nick Saban led the LSU Tigers to a national college football championship in the 2004 Sugar Bowl against the Oklahoma Sooners, according to Wikipedia. He later became coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide and led them to an impressive season in 2008 and the Tide will likely match that season with a similar or better record in 2009.

Barry Switzer

One of the best college football coaches of all time is indisputably Mr. Barry Switzer. He is a legend at Oklahoma where he led the Sooners to three national championships and 12 conference championships, according to Wikipedia. His success as a college football coach is unlikely to be matched by anyone else.

And let's not forget Knute Rockne. The dude won 6 National Titles in just 13 seasons before dying in a plane crash. And, as long as we're mentioning Notre Dame, what about Frank Leahy and Lou Holtz?

Interesting how four of your top five coaches are all young and still active. Like others have said, Joe Paterno belongs on this list. So does Bear Bryant. Tom Osborne. Bud Wilkinson. Bobby Bowden. Darrell Royal. All these guys belong on an all-time greatest list before any of those active coaches, you mentioned. And before Switzer, too. But, at least, Barry is up there with the historical greats.
