Greatest TV Couples That Never Made it

10. Moonlighting. Bruce Willis and Cybill Shepherd were David Addison and Maddie Hayes for four years (1985-1989), kick-starting Willis's career and forcing fans to fall in love with this off-beat detective dramedy. For years, we watched in agony as sexual tensions mounted between beautiful Maddie and wise-cracking David. When they finally did get together, nothing seemed to work out the right way, and fans were left disappointed with their ending.

9. Friends. David Schwimmer and Jennifer Aniston were the quintessential will-they-or-won't-they couple. They couldn't get together, they couldn't stay apart. Audiences were filled with joy when Ross knocked up Rachel, and yet they still couldn't make it work! Though Friends may be over, fans still like to imagine that Ross and Rachel worked out their differences and ended up happily married...somewhere in New York.

8. Roseanne. Roseanne and Dan Connor, also known as Roseanne Arnold and John Goodman, seemed the embodiment of the middle-aged married couple. Despite their troubles with finances, children, and family, they dealt with every problem with laughter and love. Then they suddenly got a divorce after a decade of TV marriage. Why, Roseanne and Dan, why? Fans were displeased, and the show went off the map after the break-up.

7. A Simple Life. Not a couple in the true sense of the word, fans were still shocked when Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie decided to "stop being friends." What? After three seasons of wreaking havoc and yet managing to warm our cockles with your obvious loyalty, friendship, and laughter? Their break-up almost guarantees low ratings, though their catfights have been entertaining. Fans still hope for a reunion.

6. Saturday Night Live. Of all the great pairs that have graced the SNL stage, none have brought us as much laughter as Mike Meyers and Dana Carvey as the illustrious Wayne and Garth. Once Austin Powers fame came, you can't even find the two men in the same room together. Mike, what's wrong? Give Dana some kind of cameo at least! These two should be reunited again, if not as Wayne and Garth, then at least as Mike and Dana.

5. Night Court. Markie Post and Harry Anderson battled their attraction to each other as Christine Sullivan and Judge Harry Stone for eight years (1984-1992), always leaving fans with the burning question, "will these two ever hook up?" And they never really did. Perhaps in a reunion show, one day.

4. Cheers. Shelley Long and Ted Danson, as Diane Chambers and Sam Malone, brought the phrase "opposites attract" to life on the small screen. Fans wanted nothing more than to see them happily married. When it seemed that a march down the aisle was finally in order, the audience was shocked instead when Diane left for parts unknown and Long left the show for movies unknown. Sam and Diane never lived happily ever after, and no one was fooled into thinking Sam and Rebecca ever would.

3. Seinfeld. Jerry Seinfeld and Julia Louis-Dreyfuss, as Jerry and Elaine, seemed to belong together. There were references and allusions to a relationship in the past, yet audiences were given no insight as to why this partnership didn't seem to work. They were best friends and attracted to each other - why couldn't that work! Fans were left feeling there was something left undone between them.

2. Sex and the City. The up and down, on and off again relationship of Carrie and Mr. Big, portrayed by Sarah Jessica Parker and Chris Noth drove fans crazy. They met, they seemed to get together, they broke up. They got together again, they broke up again. They had an affair, they broke up. For six seasons, fans were left wondering if these two would ever make the commitment - a question that wasn't even totally answered at the very end. Perhaps the fabled Sex and the City movie would have cleared things up, but now fans will never know.

1. MASH. Alan Alda and Loretta Switt as "Hawkeye" Pierce and "Hotlips" Houlihan had so much sexual tension between them, it seemed a hooking up was definitely in order. For years audiences begged to see these two pair up, but it was a TV moment that was never meant to be. The characters shared but one night together, and then never again. Alas, Hawkeye and Hotlips are the greatest TV couple that never was.

Great article! And even though Mr. Big and Carrie did eventually end up together in the SATC miovie, he put her thru hell in the process (again). They're probably divorced by now!
