Green Bay Robs Steelers with Key Defensive Plays for Super Bowl XLV Win

Dale Miller
In front of almost 110,000 in attendance and millions around the world, the Green Bay Packers held off the Pittsburgh Steelers to win Super Bowl XLV in Dallas. Among the elite shown sitting in the seats watching the game were former President George W. Bush and his wife Laura, as well as Alex Rodriguez and girlfriend actress Cameron Diaz. Condoleeza Rice and Colin Powell were in the audience as well.

Green Bay dominated the first 25 minutes, really moving the ball on their possessions. The Packers scored two touchdowns. One was a touchdown pass and an interception return for a score. All the Pittsburgh Steelers could put on the board was 3 points. Then Aaron Rodgers threw a nice TD pass to make it 21-3 Green Bay.

Just before halftime, Big Ben led his team down the field to the Green Bay 15-yard line. With seconds remaining until halftime, Roethlisberger connected in the back of the endzone to put the Steelers in the game..

There were a lot of missed catches early on in the game for both teams. Nerves could have been playing a part in these plays. Pittsburgh scored another touchdown in the third quarter with an 8-yard rushing touchdown from Mendenhall. The score should have been 21-20, but the Steelers missed a field goal, leaving the score 21-17 at the end of the third quarter.

Both teams had two or three possessions where they had to punt. Injuries had an impact on Green Bay because they just seemed to lose their momentum during the third quarter. Two minutes after starting the fourth quarter, Pittsburgh running back Mendenhall lost the football when Green Bay's defense popped the ball from his grasp with a double hit. That resulted in a Green Bay touchdown pass to Greg Jennings, making it an 11-point game and a score of 28-17.

With seven minutes left in the fourth quarter, Mike Wallace made a sweet over the shoulder catch for a 25-yard touchdown pass from Roethlisberger. Nothing came out of the Pittsburgh drive. After a seven-play drive easily moving the ball down the field, Greg Jennings made an outstanding 35-yard grab for Green Bay that brought the Packers inside the Pittsburgh 20-yard line. They kicked a field goal to make it 35-31. With a minute to win it, the Steelers needed to go 70 yards and score a touchdown to win by one point. Green Bay intercepted Ben Roethlisberger's pass to close out the game and win Super Bowl XLV.
