Economic trends have swung widely over the last three decades. In the 80s the economic trends was luxury and extravagance, in the 90s the trends focused on sensibility and the first decade of 2000 focused on scaled down living. As the second decade of 2000 approaches entrepreneurs need to focus on the next set of economic trends, local green businesses.

Locally Grown Foods

One of the biggest food niche markets to emerge from the economic and environmental turmoil of the last decade is the locally grown food market. This industry niche is dedicated to providing low carbon footprint foods to local markets. This is accomplished by reducing the distance that food travels from grower to consumer. Entrepreneurs can take advantage of this emerging niche by developing a business around getting locally grown food to consumers. Possible business ventures include organizing local growers, becoming a distributor of locally grown foods and selling food products that use locally grown ingredients.

Green Energy

Green energy is another emerging niche that has the potential to be a big earner in the next decade. The first decade of the 2000s was dedicated to developing and innovating green energy technologies, and the second decade will be dedicated to refining these technologies and selling them to the public. If green energy is a field that you are interested in, now is the time to enter the market as there are governmental and private grant money and investors lining up to launch new energy products.

Recycling Businesses

Recycling businesses are another top green business niche that you can enter into quickly. There are multiple recycling businesses to choose between. You can be set up to collect recyclable materials, you can focus on recycling one specific material or you can even enter into a thrift store business where you recycle hardgoods like clothing, books and housewares.

Green Communities

One of the lesser known emerging business niches is the green community. Here developers and engineers work together to construct and organize a community plan that is green. Sustainability is the theme for these communities which integrate environmentally friendly development practices into everything from the buildings to the community layout. For example, there are community composting locations, community gardens and renewable energy sources integrated into the design of the community. The people that buy property in these communities are like minded and dedicated to reducing their carbon footprint through sustainable living practices. Business opportunities for this niche range from developers to product designers.
