Green Craft Ideas: How to Reuse Computer Keyboard Keys

Lauren Romano
One of the more annoying things about using a keyboard is when a key pops off and you can't put it back on or when your keyboard no longer works properly and you have to replace the entire thing. If you're someone that always wants to take a green approach and try to reuse something before throwing it out, hold onto your computer keys. Instead of tossing them or leaving them lying around, you can reuse them for various projects.

Make a Letter Notebook

You'll need several of each computer key to complete the project, but if you happen to have a lot on hand this can be a wonderful gift for someone. Purchase a solid color, hardcover notebook. On the front cover, use the keys to spell out your message to the recipient. Use a strong craft glue to adhere them into place, then put a heavy book on top of them to press them down onto the cover. Leave everything in place for at least a day before removing the book so it has time to dry.

Make a Barrette

Decide on a short word you would like to use for your barrette - ideally it should be no more than four letters. Choose a plain metal french barrette clip that is exactly the same size as the length of the word. You can either leave the barrette plain or glue a small piece of fabric onto it before you attach the letters. Use a strong glue to attach the letters to the clip, then press them down or a few seconds to make sure they're in place.

Make a Greeting Card

A greeting card with a keyboard keys message on the front can be an especially good option for someone that has a love of computers. It's also quick and easy to make for someone that doesn't have a lot of time to put together something more elaborate. Purchase recycled folded cardstock in any color you prefer. Decide on a short message for the front of the card, then use a strong craft glue to attach the letters so they spell out the message. Place something heavy on top while they dry - give it at least a few hours before moving the card.

Although it may seem pointless to hold onto old computer keys, they can allow you to put together unique and personalized gifts for those who have a love of computers. Over the course of your life, you could save quite a few keys from going into the trash simply by giving them a new, eco-friendly use.
