Are you looking for a way to add a new splash of color to a room without spending a dime? This green craft project uses items you likely already have around the house. It's a fun, but messy project that can be completed in an afternoon.

Green Craft Supplies Required

To create this green craft project you'll need some old magazines, craft glue, glue stick, hot glue gun, small paint brush, scissors, ruler, pencil and a low-VOC or no-VOC finish or varnish designed for art projects. This project is messy. To keep your workspace, lay down some old cardboard or newspaper to keep the work surface clean.

How To Make an Alphabet Letter out of Recycled Magazines

This green craft project lets you use your creativity to create an alphabet letter of your choice out of rolled recycled magazines. The finished product should be sturdy enough to sit on a shelf. Another option is to mount the letter on matte board and place in a shadow box frame.

For starters you'll need several pages taken from magazine. Each page should be cut approximately 3-inches wide and use the entire height of the magazine page. Use a glue stick and cover the entire surface of the magazine strip. Then start folding the strip upon itself. You'll end up with a magazine strip that is about a ½ inch wide. You'll need approximately 50 strips to create a recycled magazine alphabet letter that stands approximately 10-inches high.

To create a recycled magazine roll, take one recycled magazine strip and wrap around a pencil and roll into a tight circle. Use craft glue to glue the tail down and hold in place until the glue has set.

On a flat surface, arrange the magazine rolls to make your alphabet letter design before gluing the pieces together. Once you are satisfied with the design, use a hot glue gun to glue the pieces together. Let the glue dry.

After the recycled magazine alphabet letter has dried, use a small paint brush to cover the entire letter with craft glue. Let dry. After the glue has dried completely, brush with a low or no-VOC matte or clear finish and let it dry.

This green craft can be modified to create an entire word or unique graphic design. For smaller alphabet letters, consider staring with a 2-inch magazine strip and a small wood skewer to roll the magazine strip around. You can make a recycled magazine letter out of your favorite school or college colors by using magazine pages that only have the colors you want to use. This green craft project offers a variety of options to create unique and colorful decorations for your home.
