Green Day Album 21st Century Breakdown #1 on Billboard 200 List

In Only Three Days of Sales, 21st Century Breakdown Sold 215,000 Copies

Green Day has the #1 album once again, as 21st Century Breakdown sits as the best selling album for the past week on the Billboard 200. It's probably not a surprise to many that Green Day's newest album would shoot to #1 so quickly, but the group was able to do it on only three days of sales. The group had decided to issue their album on a Friday rather than the typical Tuesday taken on by most in the music industry, which only gave them sales figures from Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. It makes their total sales for that first week of issue all the more impressive.

According to Nielsen Soundscan tracking, 21st Century Breakdown was able to sell 215,000 copies in those first three days of release. That easily made it the #1 album in the United States, but couldn't help it to surpass their prior release. The last Green Day album came out in 2004, when the group released American Idiot. American Idiot ended up selling 267,000 copies in its first week, and achieved that #1 spot on the Billboard Music Charts as well. It is an equally admirable achievement, because Green Day has been able to do it without sales from Walmart, which doesn't carry any albums with parental advisory stickers.

Holding steady as the #2 album on the charts was Hannah Montana: The Movie, as the Miley Cyrus record was able to sell 68,000 more copies. Debuting at #3 in his first week on the chart with a new album is Cam'Ron who issued the album Crime Pays this past week. He sold 43,000 copies of his album, marking the fifth time he has put an album in the Billboard Top 10. The rest of the Billboard 200 included Lady gaga at #4 with her album The Fame, Rascal Flatts at #5 with Unstoppable, and Bob Dylan at #6 with Together Through Life. All of the albums are sure to appear high on the list next week as well.

Green Day needs to enjoy their time in the top spot, because next week they will probably be de-throned by the latest album from Eminem. Eminem's new album, Relapse, is expected to sell quite a few copies in its first week, and would probably be a very safe bet to assume that his latest makes it to the #1 spot on the Billboard 200. This would be the fifth consecutive #1 album for him if Eminem is able to achieve great numbers, but Green Day can at least hold their claim to fame for one week.
