Some would argue that "pop punk" took off with a large help from the band, Green Day, which is made up of three men, Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool.
In a new album due for the stores on May 15, Green Day continues their "pop punk" rock style.
The new album is going to be called "21st Century Breakdown." "21st Century Breakdown" will have 18 new recorded songs that, while will have the "pop punk" sound, will also carry a new sound. According to Billie Joe Armstrong, the band's new album will sound a little bit like popular music sensations of Bruce Springsteen, The Beatles and even Bob Dylan.
"21st Century Breakdown" will be another rock opera that will criticize organized religion and will include working class themes, which will play to the economic recession America faces currently.
The album is broken up into three sections. The first section is "Heroes and Cons," the second section is Charlatans and Saints" and the third section is "Horseshoes and Hand grenades."
Currently "21st Century Breakdown" has had previews of three of the 18 songs. One song, "Song of the Century," was a promo on the Green Day Web site. The next song, "21st Century Breakdown," was a leaked song that got onto YouTube and other free downloading internet sites.
The final song, "Know Your Enemy," is the first single Green Day officially released April 16. "Know Your Enemy" was first premiered for the NCAA championship game between North Carolina and Michigan State. Then, it was officially released and first played on BBC radio during Sara Cox's time slot.
"Know Your Enemy" currently is making success on the charts. The song debuted at eight on the Modern Rock Charts, 19 on the Mainstream Rock Charts and 40 on the Hot 100. The Hot 100 debut was the best debut Green Day ever recorded for a released single.
Green Day's career took off in 1994 with the release of their first well known national album, "Dookie," which sold over 15 million copies worldwide and was certified diamond. "Dookie" went as high as two on the Billboard 200 charts and charted five singles, three of which topped the Billboard Modern Rock Charts.
Since the release of "Dookie," Green Day slightly fell in sells and in fans, but still managed to rack up hits. Green Day hit the top of the Modern Rock Charts six times before 2004 and managed six top ten songs on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Charts before 2004.
But, then came their album "American Idiot," which was a punk rock opera criticizing the Bush Administration and the war in Iraq.
"American Idiot" was an instant success, selling over 12 million records worldwide, including well over 200 thousand in its first week. American Idiot was able to attract a younger audience that replaced the "Dookie" audience, as well as the anti-war audience.
"American Idiot" also produced five singles, two of which placed at the top of the Modern and Mainstream Rock Charts ("Boulevard of Broken Dreams" and "Holiday"). The album also produced two top 10 songs on the Billboard Hot 100, which were "Boulevard of Broken Dreams," which made it all the way to two on the charts and "Wake Me Up When September Ends," which went to six.
Sure, Green Day has enjoyed a lot of success, but there is a good feeling that they are just getting started. The musical genre of "pop punk" has taken off the past couple of decades as these bands are producing records and singles that are charting in mainstream charts.
