Green Day released the album Kerplunk! in 1992 on Lookout! Records. This was the last major release the band has had on an independent record label, as their next album was the major label, breakout hit Dookie. Kerplunk! is the first album to feature the current line-up of the band, which includes Tre Cool on drums.
When the album was released on cassette and CD, four bonus tracks were included. These four bonus tracks are actually songs that Green Day recorded when they were much younger and the band went by a different name, Sweet Children. The highlight of these four tracks is a cover of The Who's My Generation that actually shows the band's true spirits come to life.
The sound of Kerplunk! is not much different than Dookie, though much less polished. A perfect example is the future classic Welcome to Paradise, which was actually re-recorded and included on their major label debut. Lyrically, Green Day is not even close to what they have done later in their career, but that is to be expected considering how much younger they were.
When Green Day slows it down, which happens more often on Kerplunk! than most fans would expect, it gives more sincerity to Billie Joe's punk rock vocals, as most evident on Christie Road. The band also likes to show their funny side on the first Tre Cool written song, Dominated Love Slave. On this track, Green Day actually throws a country twang sound into their already frenetic style. This is also the first time Tre Cool plays guitar and Billie Joe helms the drums on a recorded song.
All in all, if you are a fan of Dookie, you will greatly enjoy Kerplunk! Fans that prefer the newer sound of American Idiot or 21st Century Breakdown, on the other hand, may find the raw and unpolished sound of Kerplunk! more of an annoyance than anything.
