So far, Green Day has done a good job in their media blitz for this new album. They went on many programs, ranging from the Colbert Report to Good Morning America and everything in between. They made their first single, "Know Your Enemy" well known, which is how it went to the top of the Modern and Mainstream Rock Charts on Billboard Magazine. In addition, the single charted as high as 28 on the Hot 100 and the album went to the top of the Billboard 200 Albums chart.
In my opinion, all of that was done right. The media blitz was good and the first single was on my top third list.
But then, Green Day announces that their next single is going to be "21 Guns," which was not on my top third list, but rather appeared on my bottom third list. The single will be officially released on June 17. Right now, it has only been released to Modern Rock radio stations across America.
When it comes to "21 Guns," there are several problems with it. In my opinion, this song was probably the worst song Green Day could have picked to be released.
The first thing wrong with it is how it is charting. Even though it has not been released to every radio station, this song is lagging well behind in the charts. Right now, after three weeks in, "21 Guns is only at 21 on the Modern Rock Charts-you know the stations that are playing the song.
What makes it worse is this song is available for digital download. Yet, despite those two facts, this single is not charting, which means there is no interest for this song. When it comes to charting, this song will not do well at all. I expect this song to permanently end all single charting from Green Day. This will officially ruin their career.
I mean, there is hardly anything good with it. Firstly, all of the "fans" seem to like this song best. Whatever the Green Day fans like, they never do well. Take a look at all of the singles off their overrated album, "Dookie." Nothing charted. Nothing. Not one song charted on the Billboard Hot 100.
Yeah, ok, the songs did well on the Modern Rock Charts. But they sucked on every other chart. Therefore, whatever Green Day fans pick as their song, it usually sucks up the charts.
However, when I pick a song, they do very well on the charts. Take my favorite song, "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" as an example. That charted all the way up to two on the Billboard Hot 100. It was the top single for 16 weeks on Modern Rock and 14 for Mainstream Rock.
Actually, every song off of "American Idiot" did great, despite all of the negative personal attacks it received from the Green Day haters out there, even those who declare themselves "Dookie" lovers. But remember, I don't think there are that many "Dookie" fans considering the CD was the most overrated I have seen in punk rock history.
Another thing wrong with this single is how whiny this song sounds. I mean, listen to it. This song is pathetic with all capital letters! All Billie Joe Armstrong does in this song is whine and moan about god knows what.
The sound was off, the vocals were off, and it just sounded like a bunch of grumpy moans that I thought would never end. This song just drags on for over five minutes and makes you yawn, which shows you how truly boring it is.
This song had no life. None at all. Zip, zilch, zero. It was just a song of sobs, groans, moans, and whines. Who wants to hear a song like that, unless you are some of these so called fans? I sure don't.
That is why this song is not charting. This song will continue not to chart, even when every single radio station in America is able to play it. Why? It's simple, because no one will want to hear it! This song will be dead in the water quicker than it was released. It is just that bad.
Remember, whatever I choose, does good from them. Whatever I think sucks, ends up sucking in the charts, which means I have a good taste for what music the majority of Americans want in rock. I loved "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" and it charted. I loved "Wake Me Up When September Ends" and it charted.
But I did not like most of the crap on "Dookie," such as "When I Come Around," and that song sucked up the Hot 100. That song sucked everywhere on almost every single chart.
Therefore, this single should have never been released. My top three songs on this album were "21st Century Breakdown," "!Viva La Gloria!," and "Before the Lobotomy."
Perhaps if Green Day wants Hot 100 success, as well as just success with mainstream America, these are the songs. Otherwise, they can go back to the "Dookie" style and become a group that will be forever remembered as overrated crap.
The choice is up to them.

Post a CommentROFL, this guy needs to go back and fix this article. 21 Guns charted higher than Know Your Enemy on the Hot 100.
21 Guns is one of the top songs off of 21st Century Breakdown. The repetitive argument doesn't hold. Know Your Enemy is the same melody throughout including the verse and chorus.
Why so concerned with what charts well? Most of the Number one songs the past couple years have been garbage. See: Kesha, Katy Perry, Black Eyed Peas.
Everyone has different opinions.
You can't go insulting people just because they have a different opinion.
I love how he thinks he single-handedly made boulevard of broken dreams (and other songs that he likes) do good on the charts! What?!?! 21 guns is amazing! I'm a "so-called" dookie fan and I love this whole album! and all 8 of their albums! So 21st century breakdown was their most lyrical of all their albums? and? they've just matured. but just a little cause i can go straight from listening to 21 guns to something from kerplunk and i love it! You're just too naive to know good music when you hear it i guess!
Holy hell, you are bitter
It is actually a great song. It might not be what you would expect from greenday or even what America likes. The song itself is very deep and there is a certain percentage of the population that will relate to it. This song is more about the words than anything else. Whoever wrote this article did a worse job at it than green day did at 21 guns. I guess that's why green day gets payed millions and you write articles on the internet.
G, is plainly an idiot. What makes you think this song is any better than good riddance, which is also garbage.
This song is a terribly written (could have been done by any whiny anti-war moron)political statement, which sounds like a ripoff of every other poorly written song trying to be a political statement. Repetetive whiny crybaby lyrics by people who have never "been there", but have the nerve to open their mouths.
Sadly moron's like G eat it up, and Green Day continues to write/ripoff this drivel.
I definitely agree with you.. it's the creme de la creme of whiney.. it's too repetitive for my likes..
I'm glad to see I'm not the only one that 21 Guns irritates. When I heard the song, I thought "Geez...who are these whine-mongers". Then I learned it was Green Day. Criminey! I can't get to the radio fast enough to change the station. I grew weary of the rock-operas from American idiot, but c'mon! I guess this album is broken up into "dramatic" sections? I'm not sure who is running the show in the band, but whoever isn't writing this stuff had better give Styx a call and get some words of wisdom.
Green Day used to rock like punks and sing like punks. Now they just dress like punks, but I'm sure everything is tailored. Watch for the lead-singer to get his teeth capped, too...might as well finish the transformation.
Fuck off is it.... you go and write a song and see if it is any better bitch! "21 guns" has been the best song since they wrote "Good Riddance". What, are you deff or sumat?
i thikn that 21 guns is the best song on green day's new album... knoew your enemmy is probley the worst song it just repeats the same things over an over well thats my opinoin...
