Green Dining in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania

Green Homemade Pennsylvania Dutch Cooking

Britt Baker
There are plenty of green dining options in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, an area often referred to as PA Dutch Country due to the amount of Pennsylvania Dutch, Amish, and Mennonite residents. Pennsylvania Dutch style cooking is very popular in Lancaster County restaurant and homes, and Pennsylvania Dutch cooking is also an awesome green way of dining while you're in the area since restaurants typically use ingredients that are from local farmers and in season.

As you drive along the roads in Lancaster County, you will certainly notice the vast amount of farms in the area, as well as the many food and baked good stands, as well as farmer's markets. Lancaster County's numerous farms supply much of the food for the Pennsylvania Dutch style restaurants in the area, making this entire county much green than others in Pennsylvania and the whole nation. So, green dining options are certainly plentiful in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, as are vegetarian options, too.

During my recent weekend long stay in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, my family and I enjoyed plenty of green dining experiences filled with delicious Pennsylvania Dutch food. The first restaurant I ate at during my stay was the Plain and Fancy Farm Restaurant, a farm to table restaurant in Bird-in-Hand, Pennsylvania, that is well known for having the original Amish Farm Feast, a family style dining option filled with Pennsylvania Dutch favorites. This is the green dining option my family and I chose during our visit to the Plain and Fancy Farm Restaurant, and I was very pleased with the amount and quality of the fresh food from local farms that were made from scratch with all natural ingredients.

Another awesome, green, Pennsylvania dutch style restaurant that we visited was The Family Cupboard Restaurant and Buffet in Bird-in-Hand, Pennsylvania, which is just down the same road from Plain and Fancy Farm Restaurant. We opted for the breakfast buffet at The Family Cupboard Restaurant and Buffet, and I was very delighted with the variety of options. Again, there were plenty of homemade dishes to choose from on the breakfast buffet. Many of the local cooks at the restaurant are Amish or Conservative Mennonite, and the food is homemade and very delicious!

These two restaurants are just two examples of awesome options for green dining in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. You can find plenty more restaurants with green, local, natural cuisine made fresh my local cooks, without processed and unnatural ingredients. As a vegetarian, I was also very surprised and pleased by the many number of vegetarian options on the menus and at the buffet and family style meals. Lancaster County is an excellent destination if you are searching for green, homemade cooking.
