Green Home Improvement Project: Solar Lights

How can you improve your home while also saving money in the long run? The answers are endless. There are countless projects you can do around your house that may cost you money up front, but will pay for themselves over the years.

During these times, every one is thinking "green" and green is the way to save money. After reading this series of "green" thinking articles, you will be able to determine which money saving home improvement projects are right for you.

Perhaps more importantly, all of the home improvement projects in this series will show you how you can realize a monetary savings on utilities bills while also doing your part to save the environment.

Now is the time to make your home more efficient as many tax credits exist for consumers upgrading certain appliances around the house. Additionally, many home improvement stores have offered certain energy saving devices at discounted prices to increase sales.

One type of home improvement project that can save you're a significant amount on your electric bill is replacing your outdoor low voltage lighting with solar lighting. Many home have exterior lighting. This enhances the beauty of the home and adds to its safety and security at night by providing some entry lighting. Most homes utilize low voltage landscape lighting.

Up until the last 10 or so years, low voltage lighting was one of the only choices for exterior lighting. Now, solar lighting has come a long way allowing you to illuminate the exterior of your home using only the power of the sun.

Solar lighting used to be dim and short lasting. Now, new solar lights can be as bright as low voltage setups and the lighting can last through the entire night. The key to solar lighting is purchasing quality lights. These lights have larger solar panels and many are equipped with up to four rechargeable batteries to store the energy. Most solar lights use LED technology and many of them have more than one LED per light.

When purchasing solar exterior lights, look for key features such as 8 or more hours of light, LED powered, several rechargeable batteries onboard and large solar panels. This will assure you that the light is bright and will provide illumination throughout the entire night. Best of all, the lighting will work without any electricity and will save you on your utility bills every night.
