Green Living: Advantages of Buying Local Food

When you are thinking about where to buy food for you and your family, the cheapest supermarket around is not necessarily the best choice. The food that will be best for your family and for the environment is often local food, available at many farms, farmers' markets, and organic food stores in your area. There are a number of advantages to buying local food, including its health, taste, and impact on the environment.

Advantage of Buying Local Food: Fresh and Delicious

The big advantage that local food growers have over similar products in the grocery stores is that their foods are a lot fresher. This is because the time from when they are picked to when they are sold is significantly smaller, due to the small distance that the foods have to travel. You will find that your local produce will stay fresh longer, and will taste quite a bit better than the comparable products you would be buying in a supermarket.

Advantage of Buying Local Food: Support Local Business

When you are buying local, you are keeping the money you spend in your community. This means that the standard of living will increase, property values go up, their taxes get paid to improve your community and not somebody else's, and you might even make a new friend. This is far different than giving your money to a grocery store who buys from all over, and from a lot of places that do not have the best business practices.

Advantage of Buying Local Food: Environmentally Friendly

Buying local is a very environmentally friendly choice, both in reduction of chemicals used in farming, and in effect of transportation. This is because many local farmers are organic, and they do not use harmful chemicals to grow their foods, or inhumane practices with their animals. This means grass-fed beef and chickens that have seen the light of day.

In addition, because the food only travels a few miles from the farm to your home, you are saving a lot of fuel that would be used to bring the same food to you from halfway around the world.

Advantage of Buying Local Food: Healthier

One last main advantage of buying local food is that it is better for you and your family. It encourages you to stick to lots of delicious and fresh fruits and vegetables, and your meats are less likely to be contaminated with harmful bacteria. In addition, you have peace of mind that you are not putting tons of hazardous chemicals into your body that are remnants of the toxic fertilizers used on big farms.
