Green Living Guide: Eco-Friendly Transportation

Lami Eyer
Green living implies conservation, reuse and recycling of resources. In the context of eco-friendly transportation, this means responsibly using non-renewable fuel resources like fossil fuels that enable transportation. Modern transportation needs are so high that the fossil fuels are depleting rapidly. Besides, huge volumes of greenhouse gases emitted in the processing of the fuels are accelerating pollution and global warming.

So we must use eco-friendly transportation practices to go green. Here are some tips on green transportation.

• When you are commuting to work or traveling on road trip, look for public transportation. Sharing rides with others reduces the number of vehicles on the road. This reduces vehicle emissions and conserves fuel energy. Car-pooling is an eco-friendly transportation practice - many counties and metros provide resources on car-pooling programs in their localities.

• Use a small car instead on an SUV for your transportation needs. Smaller vehicles give more mileage for every gallon of fuel. This saves gas considerably. Preferably drive a hybrid car which is more fuel efficient and has lesser toxic emissions relative to a conventional car. In an effort to become energy independent, the federal government provides tax incentives for buying hybrids.

• If more people opt for direct flights rather than itineraries with stop-overs in their flight travel, we may find air carriers reorganizing their schedules to support more direct flights to every destination. This will not only save us time but will also conserve massive amounts of energy that is used up in flight take-offs and landings.

• Service your car regularly. Change oil periodically and keep the filters clean. Keep your tire pressure at optimal levels. While driving accelerate gently and avoid abruptly braking. Avoid using the air conditioner whenever possible. Do not overload you car by using it as storage space. All these tips can save a lot of fuel and consequently your costs. Monitor your car's mileage and fuel efficiency regularly - if you notice a sudden drop in mileage, check with your service shop.

• Buy locally produced items whenever possible. When goods are shipped over long distances, huge amounts of fuel are spent.

All it takes is extra caution and awareness to go green with transportation practices. Eco-friendly transportation practices also help you save money and cut down traffic.
