Here are some tips for anyone who has to wake up in the morning, shower and head to work on how they can help the environment while helping their wallet and waist line.
When most people show up to work they head right to the nearest coffee producer they can find. This could be the company kitchen or the local Starbucks but whatever it is, there is a way to go green. Bring a coffee mug from home with you and use it each day for your coffee. This will result in less paper cups and plastic lids being tossed in the trash with each cup. If you really are a big coffee drinker, bring your own spoon to stir, some sugar and even milk to help cut down in the amount of waste you produce with each run to refill throughout the day.
Everyone eats lunch but how they do it can make all of the difference. The first thing to keep in mind is how you pack your lunch. Do you use brown bags? Zip lock bags? These items are not reusable while if you would pack your lunch in tupperware and material lunch bags you could reuse the same supplies day in and day out to again ensure less waste.
If you do not bring your lunch but eat out every day consider bringing your lunch, if not try to figure out corners to cut in your meal. Can you bring your own utensils from home instead of using the plastic ware provided in most take out places? Can you bring a cup from home and use for water or soda to avoid more paper and plastic materials in use? Again these may seem like small steps but every nickel and dime green living step you can take adds up.
At your desk or in your work area, are their extra lights that could be turned off or monitors from computers that are not in use that can be powered down? The biggest thing most professionals can do to help live green in the work place is to watch what they print off every day. If something can be read online, read it without printing it off. If you do print it off be sure the paper gets to the company recycle area and not the normal trash route. Also see if the company has a double sided printer and if so make the most of it. This will reduce obviously the amount of people you use each day by half and by the end of the year, this will add up quickly.
These are just some steps to living a green life that you can do while at work each day that will not impact your lifestyle but can help you save some money and be a little healthier in your work environment. Every step, even a small one, helps promote the living green atmosphere needed for the future.
