Green Pancakes for Breakfast

St. Patrick's Day Memories

Jennifer Bove
Some of you may remember my St Patrick's Day article last year. It was all about the wonderful day my daughter was born. After all, she was born on St Patrick's Day, and it was her eighteenth birthday. While all birthdays of their children are special, certain ones are particularly reflective, like the big 18. If you would like to read the fun tale of how she came to meet the world, you can view it here.

Pre-Mommy St. Patrick's Day Fun

It is no secret that I was not the best behaved teenager around. Don't get me wrong, I wasn't disrespectful like many of the teens these days. I also received very good grades in school. Don't let that fool you though, I was indeed a partier. St Patrick's Day was just one more excuse to party. If there are any kids reading this now, let my mistakes save you the trouble: drinking at an early age is not worth it. You have good 70 years to drink legally, don't bother to waste your time on it before 21. That being said.....

Green Beer All Day Long

Green beer and various other green drinks were always a part of pre-mommy St. Patrick's Day fun. Ironically, there is actually a tradition called Green Beer Day that doesn't even land on St. Patrick's day. When I found this information online, I found it funny that although close, March 3rd, Green Beer Day is not a St Patrick's Day tradition. Wow, this actually means that people purposely drink green beer, as a tradition, on more than one day a year. Pretty funny stuff. Since there is some, or has been some legal back and forth on using the name of the University where this tradition began, I won't even go into that. The information is readily available throughout the net though, and is validated in my references, because despite the silliness, I really am not making this up. An interesting article on Green Beer and Green Beer Day traditions can be found here .

The Transition from Green Beer to Green Pancakes

So my St Patty's Day Girl was born when I was just 22. My second child while still a child myself. For a bit, St. Patrick's Day and Green Beer still held on, but it was done at home with hubby while kids were in bed. When she became old enough to eat whatever my oldest, just two years older than her, could eat, St Patty's Day turned into an excuse to turn anything we were eating and drinking green instead of beer. A nice transition from childish to for children. I started making green pancakes as the traditional Joclyn's birthday/St. Patty's day breakfast. We did this for years. It is not really until they turn into teenagers that once cute traditions are suddenly deemed "gross". Come to think of it, green pancakes don't really sound all that appetizing do they?

Not sure I could deal with green pancakes, either. I can't even handle Shamrock Shakes.
