Making home movies more visually enticing is now accessible even to smaller productions. One of the most popular ways to make special effects shots in movies is by using the green screen technique. A green screen background is a very practical investment that can cost as little as $40 in retail.

Many video-editing and special effects programs also provide user-friendly features for replacing green screen elements with brand new visuals. When finalizing plans on which type of green screen effect to use for a home movie, many ideas can actually come from different media sources.

Movies

For a scene where the characters run away from an explosion, filming the actors in front of a green screen background can be a practical choice so the cast and crew don't have to face risky situations with real-life explosions during the shoot. The green screen elements on the footage are replaced by separate shots of explosions that may be filmed live, using miniatures, or using computer-generated images (CGI).

Although the green screen technique is more popularly used in action, fantasy, horror, and sci-fi movies, it can also be an option for less conspicuous effects in comedies and dramas. For instance, the production can shoot inside a studio, then the scene's green background gets replaced by a beach or a period movie location during post-production.

News and Talk Shows

The green screen background is an essential requirement in many TV productions, especially in news and talk shows. It is typical to use it for weather maps and graphs. It is also used to show news anchors or hosts beside smaller screens with graphics, titles, or video footage of a live or taped report from another location. On-screen talents can also be situated in virtual sets which are CGI elements replacing the studio's green screen background. The individuals onscreen would seem like they are reporting or hosting around high-tech or visually grand sets and backgrounds but in reality are just in front of a green screen background.

Music Videos

Music videos often utilize green screen technology to create shots of music artists in imaginative locations and animated backgrounds. Green screen effects also make it possible to connect separate shots together to turn them into a seamless single shot. Moreover, a musician can be filmed walking around a green screen background for a very long time.

From here, the final video would show him or her walking continuously in different locations. The green screen is also a staple used in music TV shows, where hosts stand in front of a green wall, then viewers see them with motion graphics and other special effects surrounding.

TV Commercials and Corporate Videos

TV commercials and corporate videos generally require audience recall and positive impressions on their featured products and services. Like in movies and music videos, the artistic aspect of shooting these productions significantly benefits from the green screen technique. Aside from the more popularly used green screen background, there are also times items shown in commercials and audio-visual projects, especially those focusing on corporate brands, utilize green elements placed on specific parts of the products to enhance their look in the final video.

Trade Shows, Conventions, Workshops, and Other Events

Companies and groups participating in trade shows, conventions, workshops, and other related events can use green screen technology in booths and exhibits. This becomes more apparent in media-related events, but it can work in practically any type of setting. The creative and interesting idea of allowing event attendees or workshop participants to face the camera, stand in front of a green screen wall, then see themselves in an entirely different background can help get many people's attention.
