Around this time of year, the spring cleaning bug attacks, and consumers go out to stock up on their favorite cleaning supplies. These products may include bleach, air fresheners, shower sprays and oven cleaners, all of which can be harsh on the environment -- not to mention the allergies they might cause in the people using them. But there are cleaners available that do not have such an impact, and they are easier to find than one may think.

Vinegar: Vinegar is an all-purpose cleaner that can be found in the typical kitchens. It is a disinfectant for kitchen counters, floors, coffee pots and nearly anything. It can be used full-strength or diluted; it does have a bitter smell, so it may be a good idea to open up the windows.

Tea Tree Oil: This essential oil can actually be more effective in sanitizing the bathroom than most commercial cleaners. To use, mix one part oil to eight parts water in a spray bottle; spray on surfaces and wipe down. Tea tree oil can be purchased at any health store or even in some grocery stores.

Hydrogen Peroxide: Rather than risk your health by using bleach, which can cause allergic reactions in some people, why not use hydrogen peroxide as a healthier whitening alternative. It is a household staple that can be found in most grocery stores and retail chains.

Lemon Juice: Lemon juice leaves a fresh, clean citrus scent after finishing up the cleaning. It can be used as a disinfectant, and it can be used as an air freshener. Just slice a whole lemon and leave it on a shelf in the refrigerator. Lemon juice is available to purchase at most grocery stores.

    I use vinegar for everything, but I love the idea of using Tea Oil as an alternative -- bet it smells nicer too!

    Superb job on this Tonya. Anything that is better for the environment and is natural is naturally better. PS, I suffer from Low Blood Sugar and read "Alternative Treatment for Hypoglycemia, or Low Blood Sugar" but since its a Health article, couldn't comment. Sterling work on that. Info that will really help me.
