Green Street Hooligans

Green Street Hooligans, directed by Lexi Alexander, is an interesting look into the world of English football (or soccer to us yanks) hooligans. It follows Matt Buckner (played by Elijah Wood) a young journalism student who is wrongfully expelled near the end of his final semester at Harvard. With nowhere else to go, Matt decides to leave the country to stay with his sister in England. Shortly after arriving, he meets Pete Dunham (Charlie Hunnam), his sister's brother in law, who happens to be the leader of the "Green Street Elite," a local hooligan group that follows West Ham United, who plunges Matt into the rough and tumble world of football hooliganism.

This movie is an engaging look at a world not often explored by Hollywood, nor understood by those not involved with hooliganism. Through the use of various extremely violent fight scenes and gritty camera shots, this film shows the most visible part of the life of a hooligan, the street brawls with hooligans of the opposing teams. Outside the fighting however, this film at times romanticizes the world of Hooligans.

This film is definitely not for children. It contains multiple scenes of intense, sometimes brutal scenes of violence, as well as copious amounts of profanity and alcohol use. However, I highly recommend it for others, because, though it looks at a violent, dangerous world, and sometimes make it sound appealing it also teaches the viewers an important lesson in the end. You will not regret giving Green Street Hooligans a look.
