Green Super Bowl Party Tips

How to Have an Eco-friendly Super Bowl Party

Carly Hart
Do you want to throw a Green Super Bowl Party but have no idea what to do to make your Super Bowl party more eco-friendly? Below are some tips to help make your Super Bowl party earth friendly and fun for your family and friends.

Green Super Bowl Party Tip 1: Ditch paper invites

This is 2010 and just about everyone has an email address. Invite guests to your Super Bowl bash by using a service like evite.com. You can send invites, track them, and your guests can even view a map to your house. Some might find this tacky, but sending invitations online it saves time, money and landfill space once the event is over. To be even more eco-friendly, encourage your guests to carpool to your Super Bowl party.

Green Super Bowl Party Tip 2: Plates, napkins, and silverware

Paper plates may be easy, but they fill up landfill space. You have two options here, you can purchase biodegradable plates, napkins and cups at eco-friendly online hot spots like ecoproductstore.com that sell biodegradable party necessities. These are made of sugar cane or a compostable plastic made from corn. These can be pricey, and are geared more toward businesses, but you can still order these products in less bulky sizes to suit your party needs.

In the alternative, to green up your Super Bowl party, use your day-to-day plates, silverware and cups and wash them in your dishwasher with an eco-friendly detergent such as Seventh Generation dishwasher tabs that are chlorine and phosphate free.

Green Super Bowl Party Tip 3: Snack foods and beer

Beer and chips are good party foods to serve, but an eco-friendly party host might also consider serving fresh fruits and vegetables to munch on such as non-store bought vegetable tray containing finger foods such as carrots, celery, broccoli, cauliflower, etc. along with a hand made dip made using fresh ingredients.

If beer is a must, choose an eco-friendly brew like Peak Organic or Fish Tale Ales. If these are not in your local area, ask around for some organic brews distributed near you. If you are having a large party, think about renting a keg or growlers (a half gallon) and using eco-friendly plastic cups as mentioned above. Brown glass doesn't recycle as well as clear, so do what you can to avoid an overflowing recycle bin after your bash.

Kettle Foods makes an organic potato chip and Walnut Acres makes an organic salsa. Look for organic snack foods in places like Trader Joe's, Whole Foods and Wegmans. If organic chips are too expensive or you just have to have your Lays potato chips, save the packaging and send it to Terracycle. Terracycle is a company that makes products out of consumer waste like chip bags, Capri Sun pouches and candy wrappers. Check with your child's school to see if they are partnered with Terracycle as each recycleable item that Terracycle accepts is worth money to schools. A Capri Sun pouch or Lays Chips bag that you would ordinarily just throw away is worth 2 cents to schools.

Using any or all of these green Super Bowl party tips is sure to make your bash an Earth friendly event to remember.

Good tips. Buy the largest bag (or alcoholic vessel) possible to reduce extra packaging.
