Green Tea Vs. Coffee: A Candid Comparison

M. M. Rooni
Coffee is drunk in America since ages. The green tea used to be associated with the Chinese and the Japanese. However, quite recently many people have been switching to green tea from the coffee, mainly due to its health benefits. In this article, I compare the two of them by discussing four different aspects.

Health benefits

Both the green tea and the coffee have health benefits. Both of them have antioxidants, which improve the immune system and are particularly good to the skin. However, a cup of green tea has more antioxidants than a cup of coffee. Other than that, the coffee stains teeth, whereas the green tea is good for the oral health. The green tea is also one of the most coveted beverages for the weight watchers. Click here to read an article on the benefits of the green tea.

Keep in mind that the black coffee has the health benefits. It is not much beneficial if milk or cream is added to the coffee. In addition, to reap the potential health benefits from the green tea or the black coffee, it is better to drink them unsweetened.

Alertness and jitteriness

The caffeine content is responsible for both, the alertness and the jitteriness. A cup of green tea provides around 30mg of caffeine on average. However, the caffeine content of the coffee is more than double of that of the green tea. Those who need quick alertness say before an exam or an interview etc. should go for a cup of coffee.

However, too much consumption of coffee can cause jitteriness. The green tea also has theanine, a compound that is known to soothe jitteriness and to remove stress. Therefore, it calms the jitteriness caused by the caffeine content. Anyone who is prone to jitteriness should prefer green tea to coffee.

Taste

People can have different opinions on it. The liking and disliking of different tastes vary in different individuals. For me, coffee wins here mainly because it is available everywhere in so many different tastes. For an instant mood-lift, I drink a cup of cold coffee. I don't think 'cold green tea' can ever work for me, when I am in a depressive state or a bad mood.

Choosing between the green tea and coffee entirely depends upon your taste and personal preferences. However, keep in mind that excess of anything is bad. So whether you choose green tea or coffee, drink moderately.
