Greener Computer Practices for Your Home - How to Be More Environmental

Lance Esondi
Electronics are among the least green products most people use and dispose of. The computer itself has many harsh materials in it that aren't good to just be thrown out. Because of this, you should practice environmentally friendly techniques with your computers to help the environment.

The first thing you should do is make sure you do what you can to use your computer longer. This means that you don't buy a new one so often and preserve the one you have. If you take care of your machine and don't let it overheat, many of the internal components will last longer. Keep your system free of viruses and spyware, and it should continue to run fast. This also means you won't have to upgrade as often.

It's a good idea to start investing in laptop computers over desktops. A laptop tends to use less wattage while it's running and has better power saving modes. This isn't an absolute requirement but something to consider.

Regardless of the computer you have, be sure you try to turn it off while not in use. There is no need to use that electricity if you aren't using your machine. Turn it off and save energy.

The big issue with computers is the parts getting thrown out. This causes e-waste. This type of waste shouldn't be thrown into a dump. Find locations where you can recycle your computer. Sometimes the computer is fixed or its parts used for other things like libraries, schools or to be resold. At other times, the raw materials are reused in other electronics instead of being thrown out.

Following these steps should help you use less energy and be more responsible with the materials that are found in your machine. Try to make changes because these are helpful to the environment.
