Unfortunately, this natural balance has been disrupted by the extra gases and pollutants that the human culture has thrown into the atmospheric mix, creating a loss of ozone, and more of a rapid progression of global warming. Some scientists and others claim that the damage is so severe and ongoing that nothing can really be done about it. As time passes, strange weather reports will increase, and stronger weather systems will evolve.
Proof of this can already be seen by recent changes in "typical" tornado and hurricane seasons. The warming of the oceans and the melting of Arctic glaciers will continue to influence worsening weather patterns, as the Greenhouse effect continues to increase at the pace it is.
If more steps are not taken to slow the Greenhouse effect back into it's natural progression and balance, it is possible that the Earth's heat buildup occurring deep within the surface could increase the pressure enough to cause massive volcanic eruptions from giant "stratovolcanos" aligned around the Pacific Rim of Fire which would cause a blanketing effect, stopping sunlight from entering through the Earth's atmosphere and sending the planet straight into a type of nuclear winter, or something like another ice age.
This outcome would indeed cause a large loss of life, but it would still give the planet a chance to recover itself, eventually sending the Greenhouse effect back into a "starting mode", achieving balance within the atmosphere.
While it may seem unrealistic that only one person can do anything to save the world, it may be that, one instance of responsibility shown by a concerned person that inspires others to follow. There are actually many things one person can do that can create an impact on the environment around them, in order to slow the Greenhouse effect.
One change that can be made is dedication to recycling. This is a modern mantra that has become common in society today, yet how much of the population actually recycle everything they can? The amount of garbage a family of four can spew out in a week can be staggering alone. Imagine that number times the number of the national population, and one can easily see how much of a problem garbage really is.
A couple of tips to remember is to energy proof the home, which can be done for free from many electric companies, to purchasing products that have been made from recycled resources. Advocation of environmental policies, and working with local groups to clean up neighborhoods are just a couple of ways that one can work to slow the Greenhouse effect. Even if one does nothing more than to plant a tree, that person has taken the first step to slow global warming.
