Greenies, WallyBeds and Mars Coat-King: Great Holiday Gift Ideas for Your Dog

Top Holiday Gifts for Your Dog

One of the best holiday gifts you can give your dog is a WallyBed. If you've ever purchased an inexpensive bed for your dog, you know they begin to fall apart after a few months of regular use. The covers may detach for easy washing, but the base of the bed can still hold in doggie odors. If you buy a cedar filled bed, it may help with flea control, but after a few months of steady use, the cedar shavings begin to break down into small flakes, flattening the bed and losing their wonderful cedar aroma. You then have to buy more cedar shavings, take the bed apart and refill it. In addition, the covers sometimes shrink and are difficult to get back on the base. I solved all of these problems two years ago when I purchased a WallyBed for each of my dogs. The WallyBed comes in square and rectangular pillows, round and oval high-sided nests and a hooded bed. The hooded bed is usually best for small to medium shorthaired dogs. The hooded bed comes in sizes from 14" x 20" rectangle to a 29" square. The other beds come in sizes ranging from a 21" square to a 45" square. You can choose from several different faux fur finishes and every part of every bed can be machine washed and dried, eliminating the problem of doggy odor and pest infestation. Prices range from $43.00 for the small 21" square bed to a high of $263.00 for the largest bed. They are carried by several pet boutiques or you can order them direct from the manufacturer's web site at www.wallybed.com.

If your dog sheds a lot, you cannot get a greater present than a Mars Coat-King grooming stripper. The Coat-King will do a large area at one time without making your dog look shaved. It's great for mats and removing the loose dead hair next to the skin as well as the fluffy undercoat. The original Coat-King comes in seven different sizes, from a small six-blade unit that sells for $25.75 to the largest 26-blade unit that sells for $41.75. These seven units work well on dogs of any size. However, if you have a very small dog, like a Chihuahua, you might prefer to purchase one of the two mini Coat-King that sell for $22.75 and $27.75. These are also great for using on your dog's face as well as for all-over use on cats. Their last offering is designed for larger dogs such as a St. Bernard. There are three units available in this category and they range from an 18-blade unit that sells for $34.75 to a 30-blade unit that sells for $41.75. If you are confused by all the different sizes available, there is a list of dog breeds, along with the recommended blade size, posted on their web site at: http://www.groomersmall.com

Regular use of the Mars Coat-King will significantly reduce the pet hair that winds up on your furniture and carpeting and, by extension, on you.

A great holiday gift idea for your dog is Greenies treats. These treats are not only great as dental chews; they can also be fed as a maintenance diet for an adult dog. Dogs love these treats that are shaped like little toothbrushes with grooves that wrap around the dog's teeth, giving maximum cleaning to each tooth. Greenies come in Greenies Teenies for dogs 5 - 15 pounds, Greenies Petite for dogs 15 - 25 pounds, Greenies Regular for dogs 25 - 50 pounds, Greenies Large for dogs 50 - 100 pounds and Greenies Jumbo for dogs over 100 pounds. When used as a treat or for dental hygiene, feed one treat per day based on your dog's size. Do not leave your dog alone while eating their treats, or indeed while eating anything, since gulping food or treats could cause your dog to choke. These treats should not be fed to dogs less than five pounds or puppies under six months old. You can visit their web site at:

I foster for Lucky Star Cavalier Rescue (10 currently) and the CKCSC Rescue and there are frequently 3 or 4 Cavaliers piled on each Wally Bed in the great room. I have a friend with Wally Beds that are finally wearing out after almost 15 years. They are well worth the money.
