When you're having trouble sleeping it could have a lot to do with your surroundings. When you're not suffering from a condition like restless leg syndrome or insomnia, your restless nights could be contributed to your environment. Greening your bedroom can help improve the quality of your sleep and help you wake refreshed and ready for a new day. The following suggestions can help you green your bedroom so you can sleep better at night.

Improve the Air Quality in Your Home

Poor air quality can affect your breathing and keep you from resting peacefully. Using methods that help to increase oxygen flow to the brain will improve sleep patterns. Old carpet can greatly reduce the air quality in your home. If you have carpet in your bedroom, consider replacing it with tile, linoleum or wood.

Replace old mattresses and pillows that have collected dust mites and their droppings and this will make a huge difference in the air quality in your bedroom. these items can be turned in to be recycled. Decorating with houseplants can add color to your bedroom while promoting cleaner air quality. Some of your best options include Mums, bamboo palm and peace lilies.

Eliminate Unnecessary Lighting

Excessive lighting in the bedroom can interfere with your sleep without you even noticing. Lights from alarm clocks and other small electronics and even nightlights disrupt sleep patterns. Dimming your alarm clock and unplugging anything that is not in use or that's unnecessary will help to improve your sleep and cut back on the amount of electricity you use. It also helps to dim all the lights in your home a couple of hours before bedtime. This will save electricity and help prepare your body for sleep.

Eliminate Clutter

It's a proven fact that when your bedroom or home is cluttered, it affects your sleep. Subconsciously your mind is thinking about cleaning, organizing and getting rid of the things you don't need. This keeps you from resting comfortably. So get organized and recycle anything you no longer need or want. When cleaning, use green products to reduce the use of harmful chemicals and toxins in your home.

Greening your bedroom is something that you can do gradually. Start with something small like adding a plant and them move up to bigger things like replacing your mattress. Every little bit helps you to accomplish your goal and rest more peacefully at night.

Maybe I could just cover the clutter with soil and plant grass seed. That would green things up in a hurry!
