Gregg Wright, "King of the Rockin' Blues" CD Review

Gregg Wright is a master guitarist-songwriter-vocalist that will leave you wanting more, more, MORE of his electrifying music. "King of the Rockin' Blues" delivers the best yet of Gregg Wright with his powerful vocals delivering that "down-home" soulful blues with the "attitude" that his fans have come to expect.

"King of the Rockin Blues" contains 12 cuts, all of which were written by Wright. The cuts on the CD are:

I have to say that "King of the Rockin' Blues" can be put up beside by any leading blues artist today and walk away the winner hands down. The music and vocals on "King of the Rockin' Blues" merge together on this CD like no other and will have you singing along in no time.

I like the way Wright puts his writing talents to good use by relating to things in real life and putting them down to music in a way that tells a story that everyday people can relate to. Blues is a kind of music that must be felt, and Wright definitely has the talent to make his fans feel not only what he is singing, but to alto relate to it. This makes the music more personal and also more endearing to the average listener.

Going beyond the lyrics to the depths of the guitar playing will reveal a master guitarist at work. Wright doesn't have time to mess around and gets down to some serious stroking that leaves the guitar strings sizzling. Being an "A-list guitar player" puts this artist in a class of his own and where his talents rise above others. However, Wright gives a fair share of mellow cuts on this CD too.

When I decided to review this CD, I knew I would have to pick a favorite cut. After giving some thought to this, I would pick one song and then change my mind. The next time I would play the CD, I would come up with another favorite song. I'm going to just mention all of the cuts on the CD and will of course let you know which ones are my favorites to give you an idea of what the songs are about and like on the "King of the Rockin' Blues" CD.

"G' on Wit' Cha Bad Self" is the first cut on the CD and opens up with a lively and upbeat tune. This song sets the "attitude" of the CD in my opinion and also sets a standard. "G'on Wit' Cha Bad Self" is all about attitude and this entire CD has an overflowing helping. This cut is a great one to sing along to and it also has a way of sticking in your head!

"Cry Myself A River" was one of my favorite tunes because it is a 100% blues song by title, tune and message. The second cut on the CD slows down the tempo and Wright's deep soulful voice gives this tune the authenticity to make listeners believers of the ordeal he is going through in this song. "Cry Myself a River" is a song ordinary people can relate to and delivers the style of blues music that you have to come to expect from Gregg Wright. It's a traditional and mellow blues song in both the music and the lyrics. Good stuff here!

"Plenty of No Money" is a tune that most people will instantly relate to because we have all been flat broke at one time or another. Lively beat on this cut to go along with the lyrics.

"Come and Get It" (Part 1) is a fun song that is both funky and upbeat. This one will definitely get you in the groove or let you get your groove on! Part 1 of "Come and Get It" contains lyrics. Part 2 is mainly instrumental only after a short intro.

"I'm My Own Boss Man" is a strong and solid cut on the CD that also delivers a big message. I find myself singing this tune often and I've even changed the lyrics up some to relate to my own personal situation with "the boss." This is a rather funky cut and a fun one too. It is one of my favorites on "King of the Rockin' Blues."

"King of the Rockin' Blues" is the next cut from the CD and also the title cut. "King of the Rockin' Blues" takes you on a trip through the best cities across the United States to hear great blues music. It's a classic and catchy tune.

"Between Heaven and Hell" takes on a deeper tone and slows down the pace. Perfect song for transitioning into the next one.

"Bayou Moon" is another cut from "King of the Rockin' Blues" that is on my "favorites list" that is pretty high up on the list if not THE favorite. "Bayou Moon" is an instrumental that starts out smooth. I can just imagine someone out on the bayou in a canoe paddling through the Louisiana bayous. The song climaxes with a nice little ride by Wright's guitar. This only leaves me to wonder what would the lyrics be for this song and what would have happened for this climax?

"Come and Get It" (Part 2) opens with the chorus and vocals of the song continued from Part 1 and continues the sappy beat with instrumentals. Good cut to just sit back and relax and listen to.

"The Politics of Fear" is a cut from "King of the Rockin' Blues" that you will certainly relate to as it tells the story of "big brother" looking over your shoulder. "The Politics of Fear" delivers a strong and powerful message and if you haven't thought about it before, you will after giving this song a listen. The "Politics of Fear" is a well thought out song with lyrics that fit in with today's world and delivered in a song.

"Tricked by the Devil" is a catchy song that tells the story of how Adam and Eve were tricked by the devil and other examples relating to the modern world and society.

Wright slows it back down for the final cut on the CD, "Brick by Brick" which is a tribute to the people and city of New Orleans, Louisiana after the destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The song brings back memories of how things used to be in the city of New Orleans and brings a promise of rebuilding the city to its former state.

"King of the Rockin' Blues" is a fine example of Gregg Wright's talents on vocals and on guitar. This CD has a good mixture of upbeat tunes and slower classic blues tunes. If you are into the Blues, or just like to listen to the Blues on occasion, I guarantee that you will love Gregg Wright's music and this CD. For those not into the Blues, I challenge you to give this artist a listen. You may just find yourself hooked and a new Blues fan.
