Grey's Anatomy: the Character I Relate To

Grey
I consider myself to be a pretty selective television watcher. That's why I think when I say a show is good, it really must be good! The only show I make it a point to watch nowadays is Grey's Anatomy. Historically, some of my other favorite shows have been The West Wing (excluding the last season), Star Trek: The Next Generation and The Gilmore Girls. Now that I've proven my superb taste I'll move on to Grey's.

I think what is so appealing about Grey's Anatomy is that everyone can find a character to relate to. It's happened to all of us, at least one point or another, when we can totally relate and identify with a person of fiction. The balance of personal strengths and weaknesses creates a perfect harmony among the characters on Grey's. It makes each and everyone of them indispensable. However, we still all have our personal favorites and aside from the enormous crush I have on McDreamy; I'd have to say that Meredith is the character that I most relate to and therefore is most valuable to me.

A crazy mother and an absent father; I wonder how many people in the world can relate to that? Probably a lot; in the real world therapists are making a nice living off of people like us, with screwed up childhoods. It was an ingenious idea to give the character Meredith that dynamic. Despite her obviously challenging upbringing Meredith still managed to grow up to be a successful adult and that gives the rest of us hope. We may not all run out and be surgeons, but I do feel personally inspired to push myself a bit further and achieve after my show airs on Thursday nights.

Of course, careers and money aren't the only things that make for a successful adult. There's also love. Meredith seems to have had her fair share of it since the show began, may a bit too much! Either way, Meredith's character is learning how to love and be loved. It's a true mark of success from such an ugly start.

Television, movies, music and art; they can all inspire people. They can inspire people to do good things and perhaps bad as well. Whoppi Goldberg has stated in several interviews that the television show Star Trek is what inspired her to be an actress. (I know, that's the second Star Trek reference I've made in this article but, please believe me I'm not a trekkie.) As I was saying, Whoppi Goldberg was watching the show when she was young, she saw black actress on the show that was not playing a maid. That was a very unusual sight for the time. That's when she decided that acting is what she wanted to do. Imagine, what if in 10 years there's a woman operating on your heart, she came from bad childhood, she's had a hard life, but she was inspired to be more than what anyone else expected of her. It may be a far fetched idea, but we pull our inspiration from where ever we can find it. And perhaps sometimes that muse can be found in our very own homes.
