In the opening of the most watched TV drama, Grey's Anatomy, Cristina lowers her eyebrows at the new group of interns.
Does this line sound familiar? If you're a die-hard Grey's Anatomy fan, you know two things:
One, the beginning quotation of the show has enough in depth meaning and foreshadowing to give any viewer goosebumps.
Two, this particular opening line has been used before. Remember Season One? The very first episode. Dr. Bailey uses these exact lines on her interns. "Don't bother sucking up, I already hate you, that's not gonna change."
The sneak peak goes on to allude that McDreamy had already met one of the new interns. No, not in the hospital. You guessed it! They met the previous night in the bar.
Flashback again to Season One, Meredeth and Dr. Shepard meet in a bar and sleep together before they realize they are doctor and intern together in Seattle Grace.
The twist? This new intern is Meredeth's half-sister.
Will this season survive all the change? We have no sign of Burke, and Addison is seemingly off the show and doing Cadillac commercials instead. Is this too much change for the show? Can we accept this new group of interns?
Like many other shows who tried to go on after many of the cast had left, will it loose it's flare? Will millions of adoring fans continue to be left with dropped jaw at the end of each episode? Or will Grey's never live up to it's best moment? Can it possibly rise above the scene of a mesmerizing Izzie in a prom dress lying helplessly in the arms of the deceased Denny?
Meredeth puts it best in the first episode, "in the practice of medicine, change is inevitable. New surgical techniques are created, procedures are updated, levels of expertise increase. Innovation is everything. Nothing remains the same for long. We either adapt to change, or we get left behind."
Another medical analogy tells us to stick with our favorite TV drama, or get left behind.
The mysteries will keep me tuned in. With or without Addison and Burke, Grey's Anatomy must go on. We must adapt to the changes if we want our questions answered.
Where is Burke? Why does his Mom end up at the hospital talking to Cristina? How will George start the internship over? Will he chose Izzie or Callie? Is Callie pregnant? Will McDreamy end up with Meredeth's sister? What will happen to Richard? This cannot be the end of Alex and Ava! When is Dr. Bailey going to become Chief as we all know she deserves?
The fans need answers. I know Grey's Anatomy will deliver.
"You never know how much you've missed something...until it's gone."
The TV show narrator is right on the ball. As much as Izzie misses George, Cristina misses Burke, Meredeth misses Derek, I missed my favorite Fall TV. And you bet I'll be tuned in ready for some goosebumps on Thursday, September 27th and 9/8 central.
Check back to see my thoughts immediately after episode one!
